CANYON, Texas (KFDA) - The Canyon Eagles are the only Texas Panhandle high school baseball team remaining in the postseason.

All season long, Christian McGuire has been one of the key cogs the team has relied on to get them to this point.

“Everybody stepped up,” McGuire said of the team’s postseason success. “Very proud of everybody. Everybody’s taken their game to the next level exactly when we need it.”

Before baseball season, McGuire was shining on the turf for the Eagles football team.

For both squads, he’s displayed incredible versatility, leadership, and skill.

“He’s been a leader for us in football and obviously in baseball, and just in our school in general,” Canyon head baseball coach John Doan said. “What a great guy to have on our team. He’s the epitome of a Canyon Eagle. He bleeds purple, and those are just the kind of guys you want on your team.”

McGuire’s batting average over the last three games sits at .400. Along with his teammates, that offensive surge has been a big part of what has the Eagles still playing into late May.

McGuire feels there’s a clear reason for that success.

“A lot of it is energy coming from the dugout. It’s hard to do bad when there’s that much energy coming from everybody,” McGuire said when asked what’s responsible for the strong performances this postseason. “It’s a lot of fun.”

“He just loves high school sports, and he loves Canyon High School,” Coach Doan said. “He doesn’t want to see it end, and I think that’s what drives him.”

The Eagles will play Springtown on Thursday, May 23rd at 6:00 p.m. in a one game playoff. The winner will advance to the regional finals.
