MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) -The increased staffing with the Midland ISD police department resulted in a significant decrease of behavioral issues this school year.

This school year Midland ISD police department staff increased by one-hundred fifty percent.

This increase will allow them to have better protection on all school campuses.

Last school year, MISD only had ten officers.

Now they have twenty-six officers in total.

“We want the schools to be safe, we want the teachers to be safe, students to be safe, all staff members are comfortable to work daily and just make it a better learning environment.” said Chief of Police MISD police department Scott Mckown.

Here are the comparisons from the 2022-23 school year and this school year on the school fights, assaults, disturbance, weapons, terroristic threats, and THC

“Crimes being reported are down. It makes the campuses safer. I think it’s a combination of building our police departments and building morality in our police department. letting them know not just our goals but the school district goal is,” said Scott Mckown.

While that is a significant improvement the MISD police department is still looking for more officers.

“House Bill 3 mandates that there is an armed security officer on every campus. We have thirty-nine campuses, and the high schools need more than one officer so to get that number we need forty-one police officers.” said Scott Mckown.

Midland ISD plans to have one officer in every elementary campus.

One officer at the middle schools and at least three at the high schools.

According to Midland ISD, they are receiving more applicants because of the better equipment and training.
