Multiple area athletes gearing up for UIL state tennis championships

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - The UIL State Tennis Tournament starts this Thursday in San Antonio, Tx. Class 6A, 5A, and 4A will all be competing at the Annemarie Tennis Center . Class 3A, 2A, and 1A will all be competing at the Blossom Tennis Center. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be on Thursday and the finals for all classifications will be played on Friday.

Team tennis is in the fall. The spring tournament is for singles or doubles players that have qualified individually. We have multiple Panhandle athletes headed South in hopes of bringing home a gold medal.

5A:

Allex Gonzalez and Sara Shelhamer of Amarillo High are regional champions and have qualified for girls’ doubles.

Gonzalez is a senior who is making her third trip to the state tournament in girls’ doubles. She made the state finals as as sophomore and was as quarterfinalist last season. Shelhamer is freshman making the state tournament her first opportunity.

Gonzalez and Shelhamer will play Thursday morning at 10 a.m.

Tucker Haynes of Tascosa will be making the trip to the state tournament for boys’ singles after medaling as the regional runner-up.

Haynes will play his first match of the tournament Thursday morning at 8 a.m.

4A:

Scout Adams and Cooper Richardson are headed to San Antonio to represent West Plains. The mixed doubles partners earned a silver medal in the regional.

Adams was a state runner-up last year in mixed doubles. She will be going back to state with a new mixed doubles partner. Richardson is a sophomore making his first ever state tournament appearance.

Adams and Richardson will play their first match on Thursday at 2 p.m.

For Randall, they are sending two doubles teams.

Kynley Craddock and Gabby Dishong qualified for girls’ doubles after snagging gold at the regional match.

This is Craddock’s second trip to state where she won a bronze medal in girls’ doubles.

Craddock and Dishong will play their first match on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Dax Betzen and Bryson Shelton will be representing the Raiders for boys’ doubles after a hard fought silver medal victory at regional.

Betzen and Shelton will play their first match on Thursday at 12 p.m.

Canyon is sending a single and doubles to state.

Lauren Brooks, a freshman, has qualified for girls’ singles after an impressive regional runner-up finish.

Brooks will play her quarterfinal match on Thursday at 8 a.m.

Brooke Rebstock and Brylee Jesko will be going as a duo for girls’ doubles after securing a silver medal at regional.

The seniors will play their first match on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Hereford Whitefaces have a singles and doubles was have also made a state berth.

Ella Dudley is the regional champion for girls’ singles making a state tournament berth.

Dudley will play her match on Thursday morning at 8 a.m.

Brandon Ysaguriee and Macy Betzen are making a state berth after a regional championship performance.

Ysaguriee is looking to defend his state title with a new partner in freshman Betzen.

They will play their first match of the state tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m.

1A:

Nazareth is sending three different squads to the tennis state tournament.

Madison Brockman and and Kate Brockman finished regional runner-up in girls’ doubles.

The Brockman’s will play their first match on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Bryson Brockman and Creed Hochstein won the regional championship in boys’ double.

Brockman and Hochstein will play on Thursday at 12 p.m.

Harley Gerber and Tanner Wethington secured a spot after a regional runner-up performance in mixed doubles.

Gerber and Wethington will play their first match on Thursday at 2 p.m.

Brodie Weathers will be representing White Deer at the state tournament after a regional runner-up finish in boys’ singles.

Weathers will play his first match on Thursday at 8 a.m.
