AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) - For teams at the 5A and 6A classifications across the state of Texas, the time for spring football season is here.

All teams at the 5A level or above have the option to opt into four weeks of spring practices (at the expense of an extra week of practice in the summer before the start of the season).

Only one team in the Texas Panhandle chose to participate this spring: the Amarillo High Sandies.

“We get an opportunity to get 18 practices and, really and truthfully, we feel like it’s beneficial.” Sandies football head coach Chad Dunnam said. “You’re not necessarily game planning by any means, you’re not working on a specific opponent, we just go out there every day and teach of offense and teach our defense.”

Last year, the work Amarillo High put in during the spring helped set the foundation for a 4-2 district record in the fall.

So far, Amarillo High has completed 13 of those practices and Coach Dunnam has been pleased overall with what he’s seen from his players set to return next school year.

“We’ve had a good spring so far.” Dunnam said. “I think were further along offensively and defensively... We just gotta keep getting better. We’re far from a polished product by any means.”

The Sandies still have another week of practice before closing the book on the spring sessions and looking ahead to summer workouts. Amarillo High is currently scheduled to start the season on August 29th on the road against the Odessa Bronchos.
