NEW DETAILS: Victim shot by cousin with assault rifle

ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) - UPDATE MAY 7, 2024:

CBS7 has obtained the probable cause affidavit on Logan Allen, who is accused of murdering his cousin Monday night.

ECSO says that officers found Kayla Allen. 26, dead near the driveway of a house at 9056 W Albert Drive, officers say she had multiple gunshot wounds.

Evidence from the scene, led officers to believe that Kayla was shot with a high power, possibly assault-style, rifle.

According to the affidavit, Logan’s family describes him as suffering from “mental issues.”

When Logan was caught in Ward County he was still in possession of an AR-style rifle, that officers believe to be the murder weapon.

UPDATE: 8:45 PM

“At approximately 3:45 this afternoon deputies were dispatched to the 9000 block of Albert in reference to a gunshot victim upon deputies arrival a 26 year old white female was found deceased in front of the residence.

She has been identified as Kayla Allen 26 YOA. Information received from witnesses advised was that the suspect left the area in a silver Nissan.

A silver Nissan matching the description was located and stopped by Ward County at Mile Marker 80 on interstate 20 in Ward county by Ward County SO assisted by Tx DPS Troopers.

An 18 year old subject identified as Logan Allen 18 YOA was detained.

Logan Allen did confess to the murder to Investigators.

A warrant for Murder, Felony-1 has been obtained for the cousin of Kayla, Logan Allen signed by Ector County JP Elizabeth Baeza with a recommended bond of $1 million.

The extradition process will begin and Logan Allen will be transferred to ECSO Jail when that process is complete.

Motive for the incident has not been established. Next of Kin has been notified and we pray for this family.”

Ector County Sheriff, Mike Griffis, tells CBS7 that a woman was murdered in West Odessa.

Griffis added that a suspect is in custody in Ward County.
