MIDLAND, Texas (KOSA) -Midland Legacy’s Future Farmers of America hosted the annual regional barbecue competition.

The best barbecue plate was determined by closed-blind judging.

The rain did not delay the barbecue cook-off.

Midland Legacy FFA and three other school districts are competing in this regional barbecue competition.

The winner will advance to the state competition next month.

Midland Legacy Future Farmers of America hosts the regional cook-off competition every year.

This year they have dedicated the event to one of the students’ mothers.

“We are using this competition to dedicate it to one of our parents who is fighting cancer and we are having burger plates and we are fundraising things to help her with the cost,” said Midland Legacy teacher Deni Millsap.

The money that is raised will cover the medical expenses and a trip to the state competition.

Midland Legacy FFA students and staff wore pink shirts to honor the student’s mother.

“Her mom has done so much for FFA. She has put in so much work and time that no one necessarily wants to do, and she did it. I am praying for her.” said Midland Legacy FFA student.

The winner of the state competition will advance to the nationals.

Midland Legacy is looking to bounce back after falling short of winning the state competition last year.

“Last year’s state was hot. Wherever you go in the nation or Texas you want to look for different flavor types, pallets, and woods. kids are learning how to adjust their cooking styles.” said Deni Millsap.

A few seniors with Midland Legacy FFA like Bella want to finish their time in high school with a state title.

“It would be nice to go to nationals. I would love to take my team to nationals,” said Bella Madison.

The state competition is at the beginning of May.

The winner of the state will advance to the national barbecue competition.
