ODESSA, Texas (KOSA) -Calling all book lovers in the community! The Odessa arts relaunched the One Book One basin to celebrate literacy in the community.

The Odessa arts started the One Book One basin to help low-literacy individuals and it has been a big problem in the Permian basin.

According to the executive director of the Literacy Coalition, one in three adults in the Permian basin reads below a third-grade reading level.

Odessa arts believes having the ability to read is a human right.

“Literacy has been an issue obviously for many years. We do our best in this community to encourage literacy and again it begins at a very young age.” said General Manager Wagner Noel Performing Arts Center Stephanie Rivas.

Low-literate individuals struggle with reading their doctors prescriptions and communicating with their child’s teachers.

They also struggle driving safely on the highways.

“Low literacy rates are a huge challenge for our country as a whole. We have focused so much on the academic forms of it and a lot of reading for pleasure has become something more niche” said Development director of Odessa Arts Dave Miller.

Learning how to read well starts at a young age.

Odessa arts encourages parents to help their child in finding opportunities to read books.

“To start to engage our children and our young adults and to keep them reading and obviously to encourage that literacy throughout their lives,” said Stephanie Rivas.

One book one basin will have two book authors hosting a lecture series to the community this upcoming weekend to help encourage literacy.

“What we really try to do is highlight the wide variety of types of literature that are out there to encourage people to engage, and we are doing that not only by encouraging to read text. We are doing a movie showing.” said David Miller.

This Sunday Michael Chabon will be coming to Wagner Noel Performing arts center to have a lecture series.
