The preeminent variety show of television's first decades, The Ed Sullivan Show (originally titled Toast of the Town) aired from 1948 to 1971. Former reporter and columnist Sullivan welcomed all sorts of musicians, comedians, circus acts, Broadway ensembles and puppets to his New York City theater.
