The wet-hair look has long been on-trend, with everyone from J.Lo to Rihanna and Kim Kardashian modeling the slicked-back style. "There is something so chic and sexy about this look," says hairstylist Alysa Pace. But, how does one begin to recreate this sea-siren style without hair looking greasy or crunchy? Read on. We asked Pace and other top stylists to share a step-by-step guide to the coveted wet-hair look, and we threw in photos to boot. Looking like a glam mermaid has never been so simple.

Meet the Expert

  • Alysa Pace is an L.A.-based hairstylist, colorist, and extension specialist. She works out of Bomane salon in Beverly Hills.
  • Nick Arrojo is a master stylist. He is also the owner of Arrojo NYC.
  • Nunzio Saviano is a hair expert and the owner of his namesake salon in NYC.
  • Kendall Dorsey is a celebrity hairstylist who's created the wet-hair look for A-list clients such as Rihanna.

Towel Dry

First, towel-dry washed hair and remember: blot, don't rub. "You want to take some of the moisture out until it's around 60 percent dry," instructs hair expert Nunzio Saviano. Just because it's a wet look doesn't mean your hair should actually be wet. "Think damp, not wet," Pace reiterates.

Apply Product

Next comes the product. "Mix together a gel and a cream," says Saviano. "If you just use a gel, it will leave the hair crunchy, and if you just use a cream, it will make the hair look greasy. However, the combo of the two works really well."

Your hair type, texture, and length will determine how you apply product for this style. For example, if you've got short locks, you'll want to apply gel from roots through tips. Meanwhile, those with long tresses should apply product from roots through mid-lengths.

"The amount [of product] needed depends on hair texture, but be careful not to add too much or it will lead to clumps and your scalp showing," Saviano says. "Your hair should be coated but not to the point your hair sticks together too much."

As a general rule of thumb, start with a dime-size amount of product for fine hair and a quarter-size amount for thick hair. We think Oribe Gel Sérum and Amika Supernova Moisture and Shine Cream make for a winning combo.

Use a Comb

After the product is in, it's time to comb it through. Combing hair with a wide-tooth comb will achieve a more relaxed, beachy vibe. But if you are looking for a super-sleek style, opt for a fine-tooth comb to slick back hair instead.

Set Waves With Clips

After products have been applied, it'll be time to diffuse — but first, you'll want section off your hair using clips or barrettes. If you move the diffuser around too much while you dry your hair, you'll risk creating frizz. Sectioning hair will help you focus your diffusing efforts on one targeted area at a time, as well as help set defined waves beneath each of the clips.

Diffuse

It's time to dry the hair a little more, this time with a diffuser. If you're aiming for a wavy, mermaid-like take on the wet-hair look, using a diffuser will minimize frizz while enhancing curl and wave pattern. A diffuser can also add a glossy shine, which is another key to this fresh-from-the-saltwater look. "A good wet look combines beachy vibes, grungy toughness, and eye-catching shine," Arrojo tells us.

Complete the Look

To complete your 'do, Arrojo says you have a couple of options. "For the most drama, keep this look slicked straight back," he says, "But you can also change it up, creating more of a disheveled, lived-in finish simply by using your hands to shake and tousle mid-lengths and ends more aggressively. This will give the style more of a carefree Bohemian vibe." Basically, it's a versatile look that can fit any mood or occasion, so have fun with it.
