Back in 2019, Prime Video's satirical superhero TV series, The Boys, premiered, and was an instant hit with viewers.

The fourth season of the show premiered last month, and the most recent episode — “Dirty Business” — has now come under fire for a “shock value” sexual assault scene that showrunner Eric Kripke has dismissed as “hilarious.”

In the episode, The Boys are trying to infiltrate a right-wing event at Tek Knight’s home, with Tek essentially the show’s version of Batman. In order to do this, Jack Quaid’s character, Hughie, dresses up as another Supe, Webweaver — a Spider Man-inspired villain. Prior to this episode, it was established that Tek was Hughie’s childhood hero.

While the real Webweaver had obviously consented to the situation, and been told a safe word in advance of his audition for when it all got too much, Hughie did not consent to the sexual torture — and is also unable to stop it.

Notably, once Tek discovers that it is actually Hughie who is wearing Webweaver’s costume, he continues to assault him. He puts a clamp in his mouth before almost cutting a hole into Hughie’s stomach to have sex with.

In the interview, the publication asked: “Let’s start with the Tek Knight sex dungeon part. Where did the idea come for it? And why bring Hughie into this situation now — kicking him when he’s down by having him sexually assaulted by his childhood hero after his dad just died?”

Fans reacted to Eric’s quotes on a Reddit forum, and one popular comment reads: “I’m no expert but what the fuck? I don’t even think the interviewer was asking this as a ‘gotcha’ moment. I have to assume they didn’t think Kripke would find it ‘hilarious’ because it was so harrowing and hard to watch. What a disturbing answer to a very valid question.”

A clip from the behind-the-scenes feature Inside the Boys on Prime Video has also surfaced online amid the discourse. In the clip, Eric doubles down on his stance that the scene is comedic while discussing the episode with the cast, including Colby Minifie, who plays Ashley.
