As expected, artificial intelligence (AI) was one of the key parts of the WWDC 2024, with Apple even using the term Apple Intelligence, which is its term for its suite of AI features for the iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Apple has announced that its AI features will be available under the Apple Intelligence suite, which will be part of the iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia update later this year.
As far as iPhones are concerned, the Apple Intelligence features will only be available for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max users. Macs with M1 chipset and later will get the features.
Apple has announced that its Siri assistant is getting AI features, including onscreen awareness, enabling it to understand what you’re asking and take action in various apps. For example, if a friend texts a user their new address in Messages, the receiver can say, “Add this address to his contact card.”
You will be able to now Type to Siri and not just have to use voice commands. Siri will be able to now offer improved conversations, allowing you to ask follow-up questions to your queries.
Siri also has a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen when Siri is active.
Apple has also partnered with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT integration to Apple devices. As part of this partnership, ChatGPT, powered by GPT-4o will be available on iOS, iPadOS and macOS later this year.
ChatGPT will be available as a chatbot and Siri will send questions to ChatGPT with your consent if it is unable to answer them itself. Users are asked before any questions are sent to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and Siri then presents the answer directly.
ChatGPT will be available in Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools, which help users generate content for anything they are writing about. With Compose, users can also access ChatGPT image tools to generate images in a wide variety of styles to complement what they are writing.
Users can access it for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts and access paid features right from these experiences.
Apple has announced a Rewrite feature, that allows you to choose from different versions of what you have written, adjusting the tone to suit the audience and task at hand. In addition to changing the tone, you can also use this feature to complete what you’re writing, fix grammar mistakes and more.
The Photos app is getting new features, such as the photo cleanup tool that allows you to remove people or objects from pictures, which is similar to Google’s Magic Eraser. You also get the Image Playground, which will allow you to create images in seconds. The Image Playground feature will be built into the apps like Messages, Notes and more.
Image Playground will allow you to choose from a range of concepts from categories like themes, costumes, accessories, and places.
Another interesting generative AI feature is Genmoji, which allows users to create a custom emoji using text prompts. Users can even create a Genmoji of friends and family based on their photos. Just like emoji, Genmoji can be added inline to messages or shared as a sticker or reaction in a Tapback.
