What to Know for Commencement 2024

The following was sent out to all students in the Class of 2024 on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, from Dean Jason Campbell-Foster.

Dear Graduating Students,

As we look ahead to Sunday’s All-University Commencement – the celebration of your academic achievements and personal growth amid unprecedented challenges – I share your feelings of excitement, nostalgia, and pride as you prepare for this milestone. This year, it is more than a rite of passage; it’s a display of togetherness not possible when you began your journey at BU, and 20,000 people are looking forward to sharing in those good vibes.

This year, my traditional reminders for graduates include clarification of protocols that will ensure a smooth and enjoyable ceremony for everyone:

• You must be in line with your school/college no later than 12:15 pm on Sunday. Late arrivals are not guaranteed access to Nickerson Field.
• Graduates will pass through a security station before being seated. Please do not put on your cap and gown until after passing through security. If you need to leave the field after being seated, you must pass through security again.
• Only small and average-size handbags, purses, and camera bags will be allowed, and all will be physically inspected prior to entry. Please do not bring large totes, oversized purses, backpacks, large diaper bags, or messenger bags. Bag size is limited to 12″ x 12″ x 6″. There is no storage available.
• Placards, banners, bullhorns, noise makers, beach balls, alcohol and full-sized flags are not permitted. Visit this website for more information about what isn’t permitted on Nickerson Field.
• Refrain from disruptive behavior so all attendees can enjoy the festivities as they are entitled. Persistent heckling, shouting or other interference with an invited speaker is not permissible. Individuals who do not comply with this request will be subject to removal from the field.
• As we have done in the past, a space for people to express their views will be designated on Babcock Street.

This is a day about you, your fellow Terriers, and the important people in your life who helped you get to this moment. Your cooperation with these and other established guidelines will provide us with an environment conducive to celebrating your hard work and the support of your family and friends.
