Does anyone have a good experience with a particular company they can recommend? Also, what was the price range to replace each window roughly?

On the high end, people seem to prefer Marvins. On the lower end, in my experience, it’s best to avoid vinyl and to go with aluminum because vinyl warps very quickly. There are a variety of installers in NYC and Brooklyn (I cannot recommend any bc I work for Brownstoner) who specialize in windows and some of them have showrooms where you can see the windows in person. Note replacement windows are a frame within a frame and all the layers eat up the expanse of glass so you get a bit less light. Whoever you go with, make sure they flash and caulk everything they should so you don’t have leaks.

hello. i have been watching this here and since no one has responded i will add my bit. i used to work for an installer and even serviced windows at some point (i fixed the installers’ mistakes) and have even serviced and installed a few in recent years when people have told me why i have to help them and convinced me it is a good idea to help them (i do not actively seek this work).

window prices are all over the place. you can find low-end vinyl or aluminum or better-end vinyl or aluminum on up to mass-produced better quality wood windows and even custom windows (actually, i think the mass-produced window market that existed when i was growing up in the 70’s has been gutted; wood is mostly high end now; marvin, kolbe, pella). before you can ask the question you have about cost, you must decide what you want: plastic, aluminum, wood.

If you find the price of a window you like at HD or on line, this is what i think the installers markup is to install: the retail cost of the window (100% mark up). i seem to recall that from when i worked for an installer because i got paid based on what they got per install and i think that was based on the retail cost of the window. this was a long time ago and my memory may not be correct and things may be different now and here in this city.

In so far as finding an installer. There are all sorts of people and companies running around at the bottom of this installing replacement windows. As you seek someone, check references and understand that if they are not an expert and do not maintain a trained crew with an expert but source people as they need them, there will be issues. back when i did installation work, the OWNER of the company was always on the job with me and he looked at everything i did. In the olden days, these kind of owner/installers were always present.

Guys like my boss became experts by attending training programs offered by manufacturers. But things have changed: the lower end installers will have multiple crews running without a real trained and certified “supervisor” on the ground watching the crew . If the supervisor does not know what he is doing, the crew certainly won’t. Many of these firms survive or make money by underbidding competition (sometimes competition who literally charge more only because they want to take the time to do the right thing) to get jobs and by putting speed and production over quality. (it is endemic in this country from people on residential construction projects all the way on up to people who design and build airplanes; it is about money at all costs and it hurts all of us).

in general, you will want to find companies that are certified by the manufacturers. even with low-end product, if someone did not come up in this working for a certified installer (the guy i worked for was certified and was a picky pain in the neck), they will not begin to comprehend the mistakes they are making. Anderson has a certified installation program. when you deal with the better grade windows, like Marvin or Pella, you might have to use a certified installer (so they will honor the warranty; i could be wrong about this but is sounds safe).

Start looking at Anderson windows. i think they are a good mid range product. I do see them more in the ‘burbs but i am sure they make something suitable for in here. once you see their prices, you will know if you wish to move up or down.

I do perform maintenance consultations in houses and can spend a lot of time talking about roof and window maintenance and a lot of other things. i do leak detection on roof and around windows.
