Let the asparagus spears speak for themselves. Serve them warm just as they are, room temperature, or chilled and garnished simply and elegantly: a creamy, herby dressing; a sprightly vinaigrette; or with lemon butter.
Those humble eggs are neutral and accommodate a range of flavors — smoked, pickled, herbaceous and, of course, spicy. A good deviled egg is more than the sum of its parts.
This big steaming bowl of warmly spiced white beans is as comforting as a hug on a blustery winter night. It's great the day it's made and even better the next day.
Let's admit that Thanksgiving Day leftovers, though familiar and comforting, are boring. But with the roasting, toasting and simmering already done, they make a blank canvas for the adventuresome cook.
