Positive section of review
The Hi San Diego Downtown Hostel is located right in the heart of Gaslamp Quarter, which makes your stay in San Diego quite easy as you can walk / get a bus or trolley to several places within the city and outside of it. The Hostel common spaces are spacious and clean. The kitchen has so many utensils (including a rice cooker and free rice!). The breakfast is served every morning on time and it includes several foods (both sweet and sour). There's always coffee and tea available. Also there's a pool table and games in the common room. Even though it's a busy hostel, the bathrooms were most of the time very clean and I didn't have to ever wait to get to a shower. The staff was also always friendly and they wrote on a black board the activities happening in the city each day. I found this very helpful and cute :) Overall a really nice stay in San Diego.

There were very few power plugs and sockets inside the rooms. Which in hindsight is not really a big deal, as it indeed forces you to stay in the common areas more often and be more social! However, you should inform people about this when they check-in.

The room was very spacious, clean, and well-decorated. It had everything you needed to stay at the hotel for several days. There are good cosmetics in the bathroom and many towels (I really liked that you are not limited to just one large and one small towel). The bed is large and comfortable, the bed is clean, no unwanted hair in the bathroom or on the carpet. There was a fireplace outside where you could sit in the evening. The staff is amiable and ready to help with any request. There are many cafes and restaurants nearby; you could walk to some of them or just cross the road (that is, you don’t even need to drive a car).

1) For some reason there was no toilet brush in the bathroom. 2) The elevator and walls on the floor were being repaired, so in some places it was dirty and wet both in the elevator and on the floor, but this was quickly cleaned up. 3) I would like more variety of dishes and food products at breakfast. There were no vegetables, just small slices of fruit, which was quickly taken away. But there was a very tasty scramble and waffles, good coffee (available 24/7), and when leaving the dining area you could take apples and bananas with you from the basket. 4) On holidays there are too many people in the hotel and the dining room is not designed for them; many had to simply eat on a pouf or take food with them to their room. 5) We were upset that the pool was not open on the days of our arrival and could not use it.

Great location, directly on the water, within 5 to 10 minutes walking distance to most of the major attractions in Astoria. The staff were all extremely friendly. We felt immediately welcomed at check-in. The room was spacious, the bed was comfy, the amenities high quality. Bathrobes provided in the room for the sauna (which we didn't try).

The fireplace needs a user guide - we couldn't figure out how to turn it on until we were packing up to leave!

The hotel does the job if you have got low expectations. The location is good if you're driving. They include some form of breakfast... but bear in mind it is a banana, some cereals, coffee, milk, a honey bun. Better than nothing I suppose.

The structure, but everything in general, is old. Beds are poor. The floor creaks. Check in (sorry) was very slow. Lower your expectations and you may still like it.

We did not actually get to stay here. We were bumped to a sister property when they clearly had vacancies. Too tired to argue and thought the other place would be fine.

Our reservation was for the Idlewild Inn for a Friday night. Our request was accepted, however when we arrived at the property, we were told they were booked and that we would be staying at their sister property, The Strawberry Inn, I believe, even though the Vacancy sign was still displayed outside. We agreed, not knowing we had a choice and thinking this new property was in town and walkable. It wasn't far, but out of town a bit and not walkable for a 70 year old. The Strawberry Inn would be quaint for a young couple able to climb narrow stairs. Very few outlets, extension chords everywhere, no fridge or microwave. Going into town the next morning, the Vacancy sign was still out at the Idlewild Inn, so we stopped in to inquire. A very nice lady apologized and said they did have a vacancy last night and she would speak to the manager about it. Maybe she did, but that was no help to us at this point.

When we arrived, the reception was closed. We walked around with a baby, thinking the entrance was on the other side, but eventually the door opened. The Tesla charger was not working (this was the main criterion for choosing this hotel). Check-out was at 12 o'clock, but someone from the staff started knocking
