Otaornai Backpacker's Hostel Morinoki is for free and independent travelers in Hokkaido Otaru. No good for small group or family. It is just 1.4 km away from Otaru Station and a 3-minute walk to Suitengu Temple. Otaru Canal is a 10-minute walk away. This hostel are only shared dormitory rooms. No private room. It has a free-use kitchen, a terrace and free Wi-Fi. All rooms are non-smoking. 30 steps to reach entrance. No elevator. Beautiful house, well decorated. Almost like a museum. The toilet is also well stocked with amenities. You really get the feeling that this is someone’s home, and everything is very personal. You can see how much love the owner has for this place and his pets ❤️ it was eyeopening and I learned a lot. I was also the only guest in my room, and it was a very comfortable stay :) the bed and pillow seemed a little harder than what I’m used to, but it was actually really comfortable haha. It was my first hostel experience and now I’m afraid no other hostel can live up to the standard of this.

The house is beautiful and cosy feeling and Ryo keeps the whole place super clean and well maintained. The beds were comfy and rooms were well heated. Kitchen was sufficiently equipped with all you need. The location was good, near to the JR Kutchan station, a supermarket and a 7-11. Ryo also provides daily morning shuttle to Hirafu, which is highly appreciated. Most remarkably Ryo is a friendly and helpful host, and a wonderful cook too :) This is one of the best hostel we have stayed in!

Boasting great views of the city and ocean, Hakodateyama Guest House offers basic accommodation in a historic Japanese-style building, decorated with antique items. Free WiFi and free parking are offered. Very nice view and nice owners. I made a mistake while booking and we arrived a day before. The owner accommodated us right away (nice he had empty room for that night)!

All in all we liked the place and wanted to extend the stay but it was fully booked.
