The capital of Japan, Tokyo is a vast, teeming metropolis nestled between mountains and Tokyo Bay. It’s so huge that you’ll have to come to grips with public transport and maybe even experience being pushed onto a train. Yes, it does actually happen!
Get your bearings by ascending the Tokyo World Trade Centre near the waterfront, and savour the fantastic views taking in the red-and-white Tokyo Tower and Shinkuju’s skyscrapers. North is Ueno, home to the best museums (including the Tokyo National Museum) and a large park bursting with cherry blossom in spring.
Equally tranquil are the Chiyoda Imperial Palace and Gardens, surrounded by water. Also in gardens is the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya, a youthful district where neon abounds.
For more traditional Japanese culture, head to Asakusa whose Sensō-ji Buddhist temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. Markets in the grounds sell a variety of wares, though shopping in Tokyo is, of course, fantastic wherever you go.
Whether you stay in a Japanese ryokan, luxury Tokyo hotel or a hostel, don’t fly out of Tokyo Narita Airport or Haneda Airport without having tried sushi. Another Japanese institution is the sento (public bath) and onsen (hot springs bath) – a must try. Also incredibly popular are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, Asia’s 2 most visited theme parks.
43million people. A lot to see and do. Buses and trains pretty easy to navigate. Clean and safe for a big city. Food can be a little difficult for vegetarians or picky eaters. The Japanese are very welcoming to tourists.

Tokyo is super clean, super safe and the people are so helpful and polite. It’s therefore really good for children because you know whatever happens it’ll be ok. I lost my son at the aquarium and told the lady at the door I’m just looking for him, and she went ahead and organised a search party, and they actually found him!
It’s not as expensive as it’s made out to be, especially if you’re coming from a place like London. And the food’s really clean and tasty. If you can’t afford restaurants all the time the convenience stores offer really good food for good prices (and kids have an adventure trying stuff they’ve never seen before).
Walking around at night and felt really safe. The only thing you need to be aware of is the weather - pick which time of year to go. We went in July and it was super hot and humid. So you need to be aware of that.
Trains are expensive too (long distance bullet trains, that is) Next time I’m going to visit fewer places and spend more time in them, because in that kind of heat with children they get tired after too much travelling so you lose an afternoon because they need to crash out at the hotel.

Tokyo is a really vibrant city.
Tokyo is a really vibrant city.
It mixes traditions with technology and innovation.
I was suprised by how many greeen areas I've found. Despite the traffic in some central areas the air is pretty clean and pollution is really low (most of the cars/vans and public transports are hybrid or full electric).
You will be shocked by how much clean the city is! And you should ensure it remains as such. behaviours like eating or drinking take away food while walking or smoking in the streets (and not in designated areas) is rally perceeived as rude.
You will for sure appreciate the mix of temples and shopping areas.
When we went there (july 2024) the yen was very low compared to other currencies. We managed to eat basically every day out spending a ridicolous low amount of money.
Best periods are april/may and september/october. July was scorching hot (35c+ with a lot of humidity)
Try to walk through the various small roads : you will find a lot of nicee restaurants or small business shops selling hand crafted stuff.

Tokyo is a very cosmopolitan city, hustling and bustling with multitude of activities. They have something for everyone, from tourist attractions to shopping heaven, its the right place to be.
They have multiple options for one day trip closer to Tokyo by making it a perfect place to keep it as a base while you soak in the beauty of Japan. The metro network is one of the best in the world, despite being crowded, everything is always clean. You will fall in love with public toilets as they maintain the hygiene factor so well.
Its a heaven for food lovers and we were spoilt for choices so make sure you spend around a week in Tokyo if you want to feel all aspects of Japanese culture

My recent trip to Tokyo was nothing short of amazing.
My recent trip to Tokyo was nothing short of amazing. The city's sights, food, shopping, and rich culture left a lasting impression. The respect and hospitality from the locals were remarkable, making the experience even more memorable.
Our stay in Tokyo was brief, lasting only a week. Given the vast array of attractions and activities, we could have easily spent more time exploring. If you plan to visit, be sure to bring comfortable shoes suitable for extensive walking. Unfortunately, I didn't, and finding size 12 US shoes proved challenging. Thankfully, I managed to find a pair on our last day.
Coming from Sydney, where public transport can be quite frustrating, it was a relief to experience Tokyo’s efficient and convenient system. Whether using trains, buses, or taxis, getting around was straightforward and stress-free. Although it can get busy at times, following instructions on travel apps made navigating the city a breeze.
Despite the short duration, our trip was filled with unforgettable experiences. We eagerly anticipate returning to Tokyo to delve deeper into its wonders. This city has so much to offer, and a week simply wasn't enough to experience it all. We can't wait for our next visit.

A unique place well worth visiting but there are some downsides.
It is very overcrowded, streets and trains.
English not well spoken by many hospitality outlets.
Best restaurants need booking, even local ones.
the rooms are very small but it was ok for me that I was alone but my friends were family and honestly was impossible for them to move around the room. the locatation is not walkable to any of the tourist attractions and there are not much around the hotel so you need to take a metro to go to those places. the place was really clean though and what I loved the most is that they has even hair band in the room which it was so handy as I lost mine one day and used that hahhaha
Great location: close to Shibuya train station, Shibuya Scramble Crossing, Hatchi statue and shops & restaurants. About 2 km walk to Yoyogi Park and Meiji Shrine, on main JR Yananote train circuit to Harajuku, Shinjuku, Tokyo. Very quiet hotel, laundry easy to operate with English, complimentary tea bags etc and friendly, helpful staff (arranged luggage transfer to next hotel).
This is an excellent hotel near a park and restaurants in Shinjuku. It is a short walk to everything including the train stations, Lawsons (mini mart), restaurants, stores, the park, a temple, etc. The staff were nice and I loved the breakfast. The room was small but efficient. The room was quiet. The best part was the location.
Very nice neighbourhood with plenty of food options (izakayas and family restaurants) around. There is even a small kebab joint below the hotel that opens til late. 20mins train ride away from Shinjuku and Shibuya.
Nice quiet location next to Chuo Park with a great bakery at the front of the hotel for breakfast. Easy to get to Shibuya via the bus and there’s a Family Mart just down the road.
