Doughnuts, Crawfish, More Doughnuts: This Is How You Road Trip

Editors Julia Kramer and Amiel Stanek needed a break from the office. And all of a sudden they found themselves in... Houston?

How many po' boys is it possible to eat in one sitting? Where do shrimp come from, anyways? Are turtles friendly or scary? What would it be like to meet someone...who had met Anthony Bourdain?

These were the kinds of questions we pondered, day after day, while running like hamsters along that never-ending wheel we'll call "jobs." (OK, our jobs are pretty awesome, but they’re still jobs, you know?) We had a Big List of Desired Experiences that grew Bigger by the day, and we sure weren’t checking any boxes sitting at our desks on the 36th floor of One World Trade Center. Something had to give.

So one day, we broke free. We flew to Houston, Texas, because that's a place that people go. With nothing holding us back, we rented a car and set off for New Orleans because, well, that’s another place that people go.

And we ate. (We don’t really know how to do anything else, tbh.) Spicy Vietnamese-style crawfish in Houston. Freshly baked doughnuts in Galveston. An epic tower of po’ boys stuffed with everything from prime rib to hot chicken in Lafayette. And…more doughnuts in New Orleans. We nibbled, munched, and chewed through 350 miles of the Gulf Coast, and came out the other side with a newfound appreciation for the beautiful culinary melting pot that is the American South.

But we gained a whole lot more than a few pounds in the process. Sugar highs and stomachaches aside, we met a cast of characters along the way who wanted to hang out with us just because we wanted to eat their food. They generously invited a couple of complete weirdo strangers into their kitchens, told us stories, and fed us until we couldn’t walk. And we’re all going to be friends forever and ever.

Reading this, you might be thinking, “This all sounds made up!” (Actually, you probably aren’t; we make stuff up all the time and nobody notices!) But this isn’t made up. It actually happened. It’s all true.

And it’s all on video. See for yourself.
