With a history that meanders back through time for more than 1,300 years, Tetbury is a very special treasure in the Cotswolds. Thought of as something of an architectural treasure. The streets here still bear a striking similarity to the streetscapes of the 16th and 17th centuries. The Grade I listed Market House in the centre of Tetbury dates to 1655. Constructed for the sale of wool and yarn it continues to play host to farmers markets and other events today. Tetbury is a place of cobbled streets, higgledy-piggeldy cottages and elegant townhouses. None more evident than on the evocatively named Gumstool Hill. This is also where on the May Bank Holiday you will find one of the most unusual of the quirky Cotswold traditions taking place! The Tetbury Woolsack Races, which date to the 1700s, involves competitors running up Gumstool Hill carrying a weighted wool sack.
Fans of all things vintage can spend happy hours browsing the antique emporiums, which at the last count numbered 25. The town is also known for its array of restaurants, pubs, and cafes. You will certainly not go hungry.
The British royal family have long loved this part of the Cotswolds. Both the King and Queen Consort, and the Princess Royal have homes here. Visit April and October and you can book tours of the royal gardens at Highgrove. The Highgrove shop in Tetbury is open all year round.
This is a charmingly unspoilt corner of England in the southern reaches of the Cotswolds, where honey-hued buildings, quirky pastimes and winding, cobbled streets are the order of the day and it is a great base from which to explore.
