Not every professional athlete gets their chance in the sun. Even fewer are awarded the opportunity to step into the light in their hometown.

Broomfield High School and Colorado School of Mines grad Walter Pennington finally got his chance to shine on the Major League Baseball stage, after the Kansas City Royals called him up from Triple-A Omaha on Friday.

He entered the game at Coors Field in the bottom of the eighth inning, lasting for 2/3 of the frame and striking out one batter.

Pennington signed with the Royals as an undrafted free agent out of Mines in 2020 and has recently impressed with the Omaha Storm Chasers. In 32 games and 53 2/3 innings, he boasted a 2.35 ERA while striking out 70 and walking just 19.

During his senior season with Broomfield in 2016, he boasted a 0.83 ERA through 42 innings, striking out 48 batters and allowing only five earned runs.
