Peeping Tom 4K(1960)
A frank exploration of voyeurism and violence, Michael Powell's extraordinary film is the story of a psychopathic cameraman - his childhood traumas, sexual crises, and murderous revenge as an adult. Reviled by critics upon its initial release for its deeply unsettling subject matter, the film has since been hailed as a masterpiece. For more about Peeping Tom 4K and the Peeping Tom 4K Blu-ray release, see Peeping Tom 4K Blu-ray Review published by Dr. Svet Atanasov on April 13, 2024 where this Blu-ray release scored 5.0 out of 5. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked". Please note that some of the screencaptures that appear with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and downscaled to 1080p. Therefore, they do not accurately reflect the quality of the 4K content on the 4K Blu-ray disc, including the actual color values of this content. Screencaptures #1-22 are from the Blu-ray. Screencaptures #27-38 are from the 4K Blu-ray. The release introduces StudioCanal's new 4K restoration of Peeping Tom. In native 4K, the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I viewed it with Dolby Vision. I also spent time with the 1080p presentation of the 4K restoration that is included on the Blu-ray. If you have seen our recent reviews of StudioCanal's 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases, you already know that I like the 4K restoration a lot. It gives the entire film a very healthy, very vibrant appearance that is enormously attractive, especially on a large screen, where different types of nuances become a lot easier to recognize. I still like StudioCanal's previous restoration a lot, but the improved dynamic range of the visuals in native 4K unquestionably makes an obvious difference. Fluidity and image stability are excellent. The softer visuals that are present on the previous restoration are retained because they are part of the original cinematography, so you should expect to see the same fluctuations. The surface of the visuals is immaculate. How does the new 4K restoration look in 1080p? Excellent. The main discrepancies between the native 4K presentation and the 1080p presentation are in the area of color reproduction. The expanded color palette of 4K does produce lusher visuals, so select visuals are slightly more attractive. However, I do not think that delineation, clarity, and depth are substantially better. In some areas, small discrepancies can be observed, but the unique use of light and shadow allows the 1080p presentation to effectively match the quality of the native 4K presentation, even with the advantages that Dolby Vision and HDR provide. Peeping Tom 4K Blu-ray, Audio Quality![]() There is only one standard audio track on this release: English LPCM 1.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature. The strength of the lossless track is immediately recognizable. The dialog is very clear, sharp, and stable. There are some good dynamic contrasts, too. The upper register is free of age-related anomalies. I did not encounter any encoding issues to report. Peeping Tom: Other Editions
