Toronto transit station will be fully transformed as part of huge condo complex

A Toronto GO Transit station will be undergoing a full rebuild as part of a sprawling condominium complex, a project that took a huge step forward on Monday.

After signing a partnership just over a year ago, Metrolinx and real estate developer Vandyk Properties announced the next steps in their cooperation on the new transit-oriented community, or TOC, known as Grand Central Mimico.

Vandyk has officially filed a Site Plan Application with the City, a key milestone in the planning and approvals phase for the multitower community with over 2,000 residential units, including affordable ownership and rental options, and a rebuilt Mimico GO station.

The submission includes a few updated renderings to tantalize commuters, providing a clearer picture of how the rebuilt station will look once complete.

"Submitting the Site Plan Application for the station lands of Grand Central Mimico is a major achievement for everyone involved, and all those who will benefit from this long-awaited critical transit infrastructure investment being made in Mimico," said Sherman Chan, Managing Director of Vandyk Properties.

"We are excited to move forward with this innovative Transit-Oriented Community," adds Chan, hailing the community as "the first in Toronto to achieve true direct connectivity and universal accessibility between the GO station, residential, commercial, and community spaces."

"It will become a hub for people to enjoy social quality to live, work, play, and stay active in the Mimico neighbourhood of Toronto."

Vandyk has worked closely with Metrolinx on plans for the new Mimico GO station, which will include integrated transit plazas offering pick-up and drop-off facilities, 300 underground parking spaces dedicated for GO customers, and public realm improvements, including a greenway path.

The station will include a new fully-accessible main station building and a pair of access points on its north side. Customers will be able to access the rebuilt station via a pedestrian bridge off Royal York Road, while a second will link the station with Windsor Street via a tunnel under the rail corridor.

Plans are currently in the hands of city staff for final approval. Meanwhile, Metrolinx and Vandyk will continue to work together in determining a construction schedule for the station.
