The Neighbourhood Mixtape: Love the Cause

The Neighbourhood Mixtape is a collection of newly-released songs by Toronto musicians. The mixtape is meant to celebrate Toronto's music culture and provide a forum to listen to and discover new local music.

Every Sunday, I post a five-track mixtape (along with my own mini-reflections for each track) that you can download or stream as a soundtrack for the week.

Track #1: Broken Social Scene, "KC Accidental"

This week's mixtape pays tribute to Canadian super group, Broken Social Scene, who played their final show (for now) in Rio de Janeiro just this past week. One of their first lyrical anthems, "KC Accidental", a track off their second album You Forgot it in People (2002), unwinds and grips you, and at that moment - 2:40 - after Kevin Drew's vocals fade, Justin Peroff's cymbals shiver and crash: All that tension dissipates into noise and rhythm.

Track #2: Broken Social Scene, "7/4 (Shoreline)"

"7/4 (Shoreline)", from the band's eponymous 2005 album, rides like a getaway, and the anticipation of getting there gives way to the fun of being where you are. Feist's vocals reach out and pull you along: "It's coming, It's coming in hard," fists pumping in the air, and you get so caught up in the ride that you even sing along with the horns.

Track #3: Broken Social Scene, "Major Label Debut (Fast)"

This is BSS's "Band on the Run", a folky, tour bus sing-along that finds the band feeling secretly homesick and name-checking Toronto streets that makes it easy to imagine yourself being there with the entire band as they roll from city to city

Track #4: Broken Social Scene, "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl"

"Anthems" is a fan favourite. It's always sounded like Emily Haines repeats the same lyrics like a mantra as a way of holding onto something. And if you were at their epic Harbourfront '09 show, you may have noticed Emily Haines clutching these words, this song, close to her heart.

Track #5: Broken Social Scene, "Meet Me in the Basement"

"I said we were going to take a hiatus, people seem to think that's a breakup, but we're all a big family, we're going to be around for a long time and when people want us back we'll come back." - Kevin Drew
