Mysterious Skin

This Week in Film: February 29th 2008

I'm going to begin this week with a hearty congratulations to Tilda Swinton and Marion Cotillard for their wins in the Best Supporting and Best Actress categories at the Academy Awards this past weekend. But mainly I want to congratulate them for destroying Oscar pools all across North America with their unexpected fortune! I don't have much else to say about the Academy Awards (except perhaps, yawn?) so let's continue with films that may or may not be nominated for next year...

Big releases this week range from Christina Ricci as the adorable pig-snouted lass in Penelope, which Matt was a fan of, to Will Ferrell in yet another sports film, Semi-Pro. But the biggest guilty pleasure this weekend has to be the release of The Other Boleyn Girl. With enough sexy bedroom scenes between Natalie Portman and Eric Bana, and Scarlett Johansson... and Eric Bana, there is eye-candy for all in this adaptation of Philippa Gregory's best-selling novel.

On the last Friday of every month, the Planet in Focus Film Festival is hosting the 'Mixed Greens' series at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art. The series will feature some of the best films from their 2007 festival. The screening this month is pay-what-you-can, begins at 6:45 and will include the short film The Nature of Rebirth and sheep-raising film, Snow-White Blacknoses.

The Free Friday Film this week is a double bill of two dark tales of adolescence. First is Gregg Araki's Mysterious Skin starring Joseph Gordon Levitt at 7pm, followed by Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures with Kate Winslet at 9pm.

Other screenings worth visiting this week, the World's Best Commercials: 2007 London's International Adverting Awards is screening both on Saturday and Sunday at the Bloor Cinema. Also the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival as previously covered on blogTO, begins this weekend at the Cinematheque.

Happy film-watching. What are you seeing this weekend?
