Tonight Newspaper shuts down

Tonight Newspaper is no more. The free evening commuter paper, launched with newsies and some fanfare back in 2009, closed quietly last week after its May 29th issue. For anyone paying attention, its demise isn't a surprise. The once daily paper was sold in January 2013 to Annex Business Media and immediately fired its Editor-in-Chief and scaled down to a twice a week publishing schedule.

Aside from adding Sportsnet as a content partner in 2012 and tweaking its design a few times, the paper failed to really evolve over the years. It faced fierce competition from rivals Metro and 24 Hours and wasn't able to make any inroads online. blogTO was once a content partner too but we pulled out of the relationship last year after the founders had left, the staff had completely turned over and the publication, in our view, had lost its way.
