The Foreign Office has issued a fresh travel warning for UK holidaymakers heading to Greece, advising them to remain vigilant after security measures were heightened at popular tourism spots. On June 24, its updated advice included cautions regarding crime, local laws, and potential protests due to developments in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

It was also highlighted that Greek officials have ramped up security in certain tourist-heavy areas. Protests have occurred and more are anticipated, particularly in Athens, leading to an advisory for holidaymakers to maintain alertness.

Tourists are encouraged to steer clear of demonstrations and vacate any area where protests ensue.

The Foreign Office's advice mentions: "Greek authorities have increased security at some prominent locations, including tourist sites, due to events in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories."

It further iterates, "There is currently a heightened risk of such protests, particularly in central Athens. Stay aware of your surroundings, stay away from protests and follow the advice of local authorities.", reports Birmingham Live.

A warning to anticipate potential disruptions to transport - buses, trains, ferries, flights - and roadways was given as strikes can occur on short notice. Previously, protests have centred around major squares in downtown Athens, including Syntagma Square.

The Foreign Office has issued a fresh update for Brits travelling to Greece, warning: "Some demonstrations in the past have turned violent. Avoid demonstrations wherever possible and move away to the last known safe place. Security forces often use tear gas to break up demonstrations, which can harm your breathing and vision."

In addition to staying clear of protests, tourists are reminded to safeguard their personal belongings as pickpocketing is prevalent in crowded spots. It's essential to keep a photocopy of your passport's photo page secure, although it's mandatory to carry the original document at all times in Greece, as police may not accept copies for identification.

For those planning to drive, the British government advises keeping valuables hidden and vehicles locked, especially when parked in public areas. Opt for well-lit locations or secured car parks whenever available.
