An Ulster Unionist candidate has insisted that he is not being lazy or taking voters for granted by pledging not to put up posters ahead of the election.

John Stewart is the UUP's candidate in East Antrim where he is running to take the seat from the DUP's Sammy Wilson. However, Mr Stewart has confirmed that he will only be putting up posters near polling stations on the week of the election and that he will be putting up some banners in "key locations".

Election posters have become a point of contention in recent years due to their volume and the environmental impact that they have due to their materials.

Posting on Facebook, the East Antrim MLA said: "Folks, in consultation with my campaign team and members of the public - I have pledged not to put up election posters.

"Quite frankly you all deserve the chance to enjoy the summer days without having to stare at my mug on a lamppost.

"For clarity, I will only put up posters the week of the election at polling stations. I will also put some targeted banners up at key locations. This is not us being lazy or taking the voters for granted, far from it.

"Instead, we will use the time and money to invest in canvassing and reaching out to as many people as possible before polling day."
