Eight candidates will battle it out to win your votes in the Mid Ulster constituency in the upcoming UK General Election.

Having held the seat since 1997 when the late Martin McGuinness displaced the DUP William McCrea and with sizeable majorities, Sinn Féin are the clear favourites to retain this seat. Following the retirement of party veteran Francie Molloy, the party is running local councillor Cathal Mallaghan this time around.

Mr Molloy held the seat since 2013 with a majority of 9,537 last time around and also served as a councillor, MLA and as the deputy speaker of the Assembly in a near-40-year career in elected politics, including acting as a mentor for First Minister Michelle O'Neill during her early years in politics.

A large and very rural constituency, new boundary changes mean that the electorate has decreased by around 400 voters. The 2023 Review of Parliamentary Constituencies means that Pomeroy is no longer in this constituency, having moved into West Tyrone while a number of other wards have moved to Fermanagh & South Tyrone and Upper Bann.

The SDLP are running local Councillor Denise Johnston for the second time. By fielding Padraic Farrell, the Alliance Party is hoping to build its base at the 2023 Assembly election and has an eye on securing a council seat in 2028.

Turning to Unionists, their vote is split as all three parties are running - DUP MLA Keith Buchanan is standing for the third time alongside Jay Basra for the UUP and TUV candidate, Glenn Moore. Also on the ballot is Alixandra Halliday of Aontú and independent John Kelly.
