Everyone knows it's hot in Arizona right now — record-breaking hot as the monsoon season comes on slowly.

Though we may not remember it now, Arizona started the year with several large storms. Flagstaff saw more than 90 inches of snow in the first three months of the year. The Phoenix Open was a muddy mess with multiple rain delays.

What is the hottest month in Phoenix?

July is typically the hottest month in Arizona, according to data from the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

The mean average temperature between 1991 and 2020 for July is 95.5 degrees in Phoenix. August was typically the second hottest month, with a mean average temperature of 94.4 degrees. June followed, with a mean average temperature of 91.4 degrees.

What was the hottest month in Arizona history?

Worley said the hottest month ever recorded in Phoenix was July 2023, with a mean average temperature of 102.7 degrees. He said while we are favored to see above-normal temperatures this July, it's hard to predict what the mean average temperature will be.

What was the hottest day ever in metro Phoenix?

The hottest day recorded in Phoenix history was June 26, 1990, when temperatures soared to 122 degrees. They hit 118 degrees at 1 p.m. and reached the day's peak at 2:47 p.m. 

More than 20 flights from multiple airlines at Sky Harbor were canceled, delayed or diverted, The Republic reported, calling it "the Phoenix version of snowed-in runways." Three people were reported to have died, and paramedics responded to dozens of heat-related calls that day, mostly due to dehydration.

When is monsoon season in Arizona?

The Arizona monsoon season starts approximately in June and continues through September. Since 2008, the established dates from the National Weather Service are from June 15 through Sept. 30.
