Jack Hughes doesn't hold back when assessing Devils play through two games

Jack Hughes didn’t hold back when assessing the Devils’ play after another blowout loss to the rival Rangers on Thursday night in Newark.

The New Jersey star simply said his team needs to play a lot better in just about every facet of the game.

“Bad time to be in a slump. We gotta get out of that,” Hughes said. “Not a very good start to the series, but we got a bunch of opportunities left. Gotta play better.”

Asked what needs to get better, Hughes answered with an “all of the above.”

“Our whole game,” Hughes said. “I don’t think we’re playing very well. Taking terrible penalties. Everybody’s gotta play better and go from there.

“A lot of it is our game. We gotta focus on ourselves. They’re a good team. We’re not playing to our standard, and it’s biting us in the ass right now.”

The Devils will have to improve on a lot in a hurry before the series is out of reach, and Hughes isn’t hiding from that reality.

“Of course there’s frustration. We just got whacked for the second straight game,” Hughes said. “We gotta go to The Garden and play a lot better.”
