Devils sign GM Tom Fitzgerald to multi-year extension

UPDATE: The Devils officially announced the extension and promotion Tuesday morning.

The Devils are reportedly keeping their general manager long term, while giving him a promotion as well.

According to Darren Dreger of TSN, New Jersey has agreed to a multi-year contract extension with Tom Fitzgerald, who has also been promoted to president of hockey operations, though he will keep his GM title as well.

Fitzgerald, with the organization since 2015, took over for Ray Shero and inherited an organization in disarray. He did enough to have his interim title removed in 2020, and a year later, signed former No. 1 pick and current superstar Jack Hughes to a team-friendly eight-year extension. A year after that, the young Devils broke out and enjoyed their best regular season in franchise history, culminating in a dramatic game seven win over the rival Rangers in the first round of the playoffs.

During that season, Fitzgerald made a trade deadline move for Timo Meier, and signed him to a multi-year deal this past offseason.

The Devils are on the fringe of the playoff picture this season, battling injuries to key players, including Hughes, while trying to cover up putrid goaltending.
