Rumina Velshi is a nonresident senior fellow at the Nuclear Energy Policy Initiative of the Atlantic Council’s Global Energy Center.

Velshi  is a widely recognized expert on nuclear safety regulations, global regulatory harmonization initiatives, new nuclear technology, and the global nuclear supply chain.

From 2018 to 2023, Velshi served as president and chief executive officer of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Canada’s nuclear regulator. Before that, she was a member of the CNSC Commission.

She currently serves on the board of SaskPower, Hydro Ottawa, and the International Atomic Energy Agency’s International Safety Advisory Group. She is the appointed chair of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Nuclear Energy Agency High Level Group on Trust and serves as strategic advisor at Torys LLP, a North American corporate law firm. Her clients include traditional utilities, power generation companies, and regulatory bodies, as well as new entrants, including startups and developers.

Her career in the nuclear sector spans more than four decades when she began working at Ontario Hydro (now, Ontario Power Generation) as an engineer.
