Description

This introductory workshop presents an overview of the “new” ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR diagnosis, prolonged grief disorder (PGD), formerly referred to as complicated grief. The presenter will discuss the diagnostic criteria for PGD, a framework of grief, how adaption to loss can be derailed, and the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of PGD. The debate about labeling or stigmatizing grief is also addressed.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the impact of a clinician’s degree of multicultural awareness and “death” competence on client outcomes in grief work.
  • Explain three risk factors inherent in the COVID-19 pandemic that increase the risk of PGD.
  • Summarize the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria for PGD.
