True to the book. Uses JA’s English dialog. Acting, settings, scenes, all good. I got a feeling I was in the countryside the Bennet’s et. al. we in. I think Mrs Bennet was a bit over the top, too clowns. Not as I imagined. And Lady De Bourgh - scary, loved her.

What can I really say about this apart from it being a classic? Some of the acting is amazing and some is really quite subpar, but that's almost irrelevant considering Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy is probably the best portrayal to date.

Exquisite Storytelling that Would Make Jane Austen Proud

I was captivated by this series anew, having first seen it long ago and read the book in youth. The exuberant promise of youth shines through these young actors. But now I see it also through the temporal veil that dictated how much of a woman's value was held by society's judgment upon her. Like a corset, the constriction allowed personality and emotions to come through the characters only in very understated, nuanced ways. The constriction was similar for the men, although not to such a severe degree - witness a couple of Darcy's very slight smiles that spoke volumes of happiness and hope. The story's twists and turns occupy my mind and spark so many emotions. This version of P&P captures the depth and breadth of Austen's work -- even with so many "collateral" situations and scenes through we learn of the protagonists' character growth and emotions . Kudos to the creators of this series who dared to spend 6 episodes really exploring Austen's book and not pandering to the then-trending constriction of limiting movies to 75-90 minutes. That call took guts, but a lesser treatment of P&P would not have the same impact in depth and texture, although a pared down version may still be a good "bear bones" story well told with brilliant cinematography and much beauty. This is the best version of Pride and Prejudice ever made—and I’m not the only one who thinks so! It’s the closest version to the book, has all the delightful dialogue and characters included, and has perfect actors chosen for the main characters. Jennifer Ehle is so perfect as Lizzie—witty, clever, intelligent, kind, loving, amused, and indignant at turns, and Colin Firth is THE quintessential Mr. Darcy, and of course, there’s the famous wet white shirt scene that has become so beloved. This version of Pride and Prejudice is simply perfect!

This is my favorite film version of this great story which was adapted from the novel, "Pride and Prejudice", that was written by Jane Austen. Also, Jennifer Ehle, who starred in this version, is my favorite actress of the various actresses who have played the part of Elizabeth Bennet. In this version, enough time was allotted to thoroughly cover the novel's important scenes and parts of the novel. In the 1940 version, the role of Elizabeth Bennet was played by Greer Garson, who was way too old at the time for the part. This 1940 version does not follow the story line as well as the Jennifer Ehle version, and also the costumes were not appropriate for the time period. The costumes in this version would have looked much better if used during the filming of "Gone With the Wind" as apparently some were actually used in both movies. In 1985, the BBC did another version of this great classic, and this time Elizabeth Garvie starred in the role of Elizabeth Bennet. Unfortunately, this version must have had a small budget, as the sets seemed to be something right out of a stage play. One of the bright spots in this version was the great acting job that was done by Elizabeth Garvey. It is too bad that they did not put more money into this project and had done something in creating better sets along with some outdoor scenes. I was not particularly impressed with the work done by David Rintoul as he performed the role of Mr. Darcy. My second favorite version of this classic story was the 2005 version that starred Kiera Knightley in the role of Elizabeth Bennet. This version could have been the best as it had some extremely talented actors in it such as Kiera Knightly, Matthew MacFadyen, Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, Rosamund Pike, and Judi Dench and others excellent actors The costumes and sets and locations were superb. They also deviated in the story line several times which I did not like. The producers of this video brought everything together to make what should have been the ultimate version of "Pride and Prejudice" except for one thing, and that was in allotting enough time to tell the story adequately without being rushed along. They ran this film at 2 hours 9 minutes and this is where they made their mistake. In order to cram all of the important scenes into this 2 hour block, they lost their opportunity to make a truly great film. Unless you were already familiar with the various scenes of the book you might end up wandering just what was going on. This was like a film that was being ran at high spped. They should have allotted at least 3 hours, if not 4 hours for this film. Thus, for me this 2005 film will always be the runner up to the 1995 film in which plenty of time was allotted to make what is still the definitive version of "Pride and Prejudice". This 1995 film seems to have given quite a boost to the career of Colin Firth. I would have like to have seen more attention to paid to the excellent acting that had been done by Jennifer Ehle. In her work in this film, she portrayed a exremely credible Elizabeth Bennet. Hopefully, in the future she will be given more opportunities to take leading roles and show off her acting talents and stage skills. I would give this film 10 stars if that was possible.
