I honestly went into this book so excited due to the reviews!! Once I heard that it was full of great banter and characters that had depth to them, I was hooked. That was honestly the opposite of what I was met with. While the female main character has an interesting backstory with some layers, there are so many times where she does things that are so confusing and don’t make sense for her character?? Her character is consistently contradicting herself and seemingly never learning from it. As for the male main character, he is made out to be the most insufferable character ever. Seriously, I cannot make this up. From the straight up harassment of the female main character to his weird line deliveries and internal thoughts, he is seriously one of the worst main male characters I’ve ever read about. Although you get to experience SOME of his more normal behavior toward the end, I was left wondering if his character was just meant to be a joke. The other thing I absolutely could not stand was the banter between the leads. It felt like I was witnessing two middle schoolers go back and forth about who is better at being annoying. Also, the use of the “nick names” (if you would call them that) all the time is so annoying, if they were even used sparingly, it would make the book so much better. Seriously, I hated it. However, I really enjoyed the parts where they actually got to talk to each other like regular people and the fighting scenes were also well written, other than the occasional cringy line of dialogue. Other than that, the writing was so disappointing!! There could have been so many interesting things done with each character and yet the main focus is the same thing every. single. time. Guys, there are so many better books that are based on enemies to lovers with much better writing!!! To end the review here are some of the “best” lines in the book without context: “Are you going to make me spoon-feed you too, or can you handle feeding yourself?” “This girl might be the death of me. Literally” “ “Shh.” I press my fingers to her lips lightly and the words die in her throat. “I suppose my job will forever be feeding you from now on, hmm, Gray?” “ “Walking on a sharp blade and hoping I don’t get cut. Playing with fire and hoping I don’t get burned. Swimming in a dangerous current and hoping I don’t drown. (Yes. These are all consecutive.) He is dangerous.” “ Not until I looked into a pair of ocean-blue eyes and realized perhaps drowning was a beautiful thing. Not until I looked into a pair of fiery blue eyes and realized perhaps burning was a painless thing. Not until I looked into a pair of sky-blue eyes and realized that perhaps falling was a peaceful thing.” (Mind you, the FMC ONLY asked the MMC what his favorite color was…)
Don’t worry these are only the lines I bookmarked through the FIRST HALF of the book, it gets worse!!!
