What is the difference between Amazon Music Prime and Amazon Music Unlimited?

Do I need to be a Prime member or an Amazon Music Unlimited subscriber to listen to music from Amazon on my Echo?
Customers in the US who do not yet have a Prime membership or a subscription to Amazon Music Unlimited are able to listen to an ad-supported selection of top playlists and stations on compatible Alexa-enabled devices with Amazon Music, for free.
Who may be part of a Family Plan?
Family members invited by email must have a standard Amazon account in order to join your Family Plan. Please note they will be able to make purchases on Amazon with the payment method used for your subscription.
Are Family Plan accounts shared?
Accounts are not shared and there is no common family profile. Each family member has an Amazon account with personalized recommendations.
Who pays for the Family Plan?
The person who signs up for the Family Plan is the subscriber and pays $16.99/month or $159/year (available to Prime members only) using a payment method like a credit or debit card.
Will we each have our own music libraries and personalized recommendations in a Family Plan? Everyone in our family has different musical tastes and interests.

How many devices can play music at the same time with Family Plan?
You and your family can stream music on up to 6 devices at the same time.
With the Family Plan, do our shared home devices–for example, the Echo in the kitchen and the Dot in living room–each need to be associated with a different family member to play at the same time?
No, those can be associated with one family member’s account and you will still be able to stream music on up to 6 devices as the same time.
What is the Single Device plan?
We know how important music is to Amazon Echo and Fire TV owners, so we created a special subscription plan just for them. For $5.99/month, listen to Amazon Music Unlimited on a single Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Look, Amazon Tap, or Fire TV. Amazon Music Unlimited has a catalog of 100 million songs, so now you can ask Alexa to play just about any song or artist. Think of Echo plus Amazon Music Unlimited as the ultimate personalized jukebox, with Alexa as the DJ. To start a free trial on your Echo, just ask, "Alexa, try Amazon Music Unlimited." Do I need the Single Device plan to listen on my Echo?
No. All Amazon Music Unlimited subscription plans work on Amazon Echo and Fire TV devices. So does Amazon Music Prime. The Single Device Plan is a special, low-cost subscription plan designed for Amazon Echo and Fire TV owners who want to listen to Amazon Music Unlimited on a single device but aren't interested in listening on other devices like smartphones, tablets, computers or multiple Amazon Echo or Fire TV devices.
I have multiple Echo devices. With the Single Device Plan, can I listen to Amazon Music Unlimited on all of them?
The Single Device Plan allows you to listen to Amazon Music Unlimited on a single Amazon Echo, Echo Show, Echo Look, Echo Dot, Echo Spot, Echo Plus, or Amazon Tap for $5.99/month. It can't be used on multiple Echo devices. To listen to Amazon Music Unlimited on multiple devices (like your smartphone, tablet, PC/Mac, and Fire TV), you will have to upgrade to the Individual or Family plan.
What is Amazon Music Unlimited for Students?
Amazon Music Unlimited for Students is an audio streaming subscription, discounted for students who are currently enrolled in a degree-granting college or university. To verify eligibility, all customers must validate student status through a third party validation service, SheerID. This discount applies as long as you are a verified student and for a maximum of 4 years after signup.
How do I qualify for Amazon Music Unlimited for Students?
If you’re a student currently enrolled in a degree-granting college or university, you can start the registration process for Amazon Music Unlimited for Students here.
As part of the subscription process, you are asked to provide verification of enrollment. Verification is confirmed with third-party vendor, SheerID. If your student status can’t be automatically verified, you’ll be asked to manually upload enrollment documentation. You must provide one of the following:

iTunes Billing: How do I manage or update my Amazon Music Unlimited Plan purchased in the Amazon Music app on an Apple iPhone or iPad (iOS) Device?
If you purchased Amazon Music Unlimited through the Amazon Music app on an Apple iPhone or iPad (iOS) device, your subscription was created through your Apple iTunes account. Amazon cannot cancel, manage, update payment methods, or offer refunds for subscriptions purchased through Apple.
Instead, please use your Apple iPhone or iPad (iOS) device to update your payment method or cancel your Amazon Music Unlimited subscription. Which Amazon devices support HD?

How can I find and play HD and Ultra HD Audio Music on my Alexa-enabled device?
Amazon Music will always play the best available audio quality that your Echo device and network supports. Since Amazon Music Unlimited has over 100 million tracks available in HD audio, in most cases your music will automatically play in HD quality or better. The best way to browse HD and Ultra HD music is with the Amazon Music app. Songs and albums available in HD or Ultra HD will have an “HD” or “Ultra HD” badge. To play music on your Alexa-enabled device, connect to Alexa Cast by tapping on the Casting icon on the Now Playing screen. Then, connect to your device and select music to start playing. To play Ultra HD music on your Echo Studio, you can also try asking for Ultra HD playlists such as “Alexa, play the Best of Ultra HD Playlist.”
Which iOS devices support HD?
Most iPhones and iPads released since 2014 (devices running on iOS 11, or later) can support HD/Ultra HD (up to 24-bit, 48kHz) without any additional equipment. Which Mac devices support HD?
Any Mac from 2013 or later supports HD/Ultra HD. However, adjusting the default Mac audio settings is required to listen in the highest quality:
- Go to Applications/Utilities folder
- Open “Audio MIDI Setup.app”
- Update speaker or headphone “Format” setting to the highest sample rate for 24-bit (96 kHz or 192 kHz)

Which headphones/speakers support HD?
Headphones and speakers with a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz are recommended to best appreciate HD playback. Headphones certified with a Hi-Res Audio logo have an even higher frequency response (greater than 40 kHz), and are best for Ultra HD playback. Most wireless headphones compress audio during transmission and are unable to support HD and higher quality playback. Some wireless headphones and Android devices that use advanced Bluetooth with either the Qualcomm aptX/aptX HD or Sony LDAC wireless standards, can support HD/Ultra HD playback (up to 24-bit, 48kHz).
Does Amazon Music support exclusive mode?
Yes, exclusive mode is available in the Amazon Music app for Windows and Mac. To enable exclusive mode, click the Devices icon on the player and check the Exclusive Mode option.
What is exclusive mode?
When exclusive mode is enabled, the Amazon Music app will block sounds from other applications while music is playing. This provides a number of sound quality benefits, notably that it allows the Amazon Music app to play music in the highest possible quality supported by your playback device. It also reduces the likelihood of playback errors that can occur when multiple applications are playing audio at the same time. It is important to note that other applications will not be able to play audio when a song is playing while exclusive mode is enabled.
How much space will HD files take up when downloaded to my device?
The size of a downloaded song depends on the file’s bit depth, sampling frequency, and compression codec used, with higher-quality lossless files being larger in size. Below are examples of file sizes for a 3½ minute song:
- SD (lossy): 9 MB
- HD (lossless, 44.1 kHz sample rate): 51 MB
- Ultra HD (lossless, max 192 kHz sample rate): 153 MB
What data speed does my internet connection need to be to listen to HD?
We recommend a steady internet connection of 1.5 to 2 Mbps for HD streaming and 5 to 10 Mbps for Ultra HD streaming – typically available in LTE signals. For data usage purposes, note that HD audio typically consumes up to 5.5 MB of data per minute, and Ultra HD audio up to 12 MB of data per minute (when listening at the highest sample rates).
How do I know the audio quality of content I am listening to?
With Amazon Unlimited, you can listen to content in SD, HD, Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos or 360 Reality Audio when available. Select the SD/HD/Ultra HD/Dolby Atmos/360 Reality Audio badge on the Now Playing screen to view the following streaming details:
- Audio Quality: The quality of the currently playing song. This may be affected by network conditions and/or device capabilities.
- Track Quality: The highest quality available for that song in the Amazon Music Unlimited catalog.
- Device: Shows the device that is playing the audio as well as the quality of the audio as it passes through your device. Quality may be affected by network conditions or streaming settings.
- Output: Refers to the headphones, speakers or external DAC connected to the device. This also shows the quality of the song that is playing.
How can I find music in HD, Ultra HD or spatial audio?
Songs available in HD, Ultra HD, Dolby Atmos or 360 Reality Audio will have a badge within your Amazon Music app. You will encounter these badges as you browse and search within the app.
