Strong second book in the series
Rule of the Aurora King blew me away. I loved Trial of the Sun Queen, but the way this second book was able to propel the story forward made it that much better for me.Rule of the Aurora King brings Lor back to the Aurora, now at the hands of Nadir, the Aurora Prince. I loved getting to know Nadir a lot better in this one. His intensity and grumpiness makes him an automatic fave. Plus his magic sounds beautiful. It's basically shadows but in the colors of the northern lights.I loved that there was a bigger sense of found family in this book, as well as familial secrets and reveals. The spice picks up just a bit, but there's still a slow burn. This is a true enemies to lovers book, and I enjoyed every second of the tension and the banter. There's also an additional POV that brings more history to light, along with Lor's and Nadir's.I love Nisha's writing and can't wait to not only continue this series but read her other works as well.

Just like the first, I flew through this book so quickly. While the first book was action packed, this second one was filled with tension & angst (everything I love in a good romantasy!). I absolutely adored Nadir’s morally gray character in this book, as well as getting his POV. At times, Lor’s hot & cold feelings towards him made me want to scream…but considering I couldn’t seem to pry my kindle out of my fingers, it didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the story.

An absolutely amazing second book. Sometimes when a book is in a series, the first one will be really good and the second will kinda loose steam, but that isn’t the case with this series. I’d even say I enjoyed this second book more than the first one.

We have a great enemies to lovers romance where the MMC falls first, a stubborn and determined FMC and an amazing story and world that just gets more interesting the more we learn about it.

Lor has become one of my favorite characters. She is very complex, and even though she’s come a long way and grown into her role as primary, she’s still working through a lot of the trauma from her past. I really appreciate that the author doesn’t make that an easy journey. The development takes time and the author allows the characters to go through all their feelings in a really believable and engaging way.

I’m also really in love with Nadir because he wants Lor so badly, but he’s also willing to wait as long as it takes for her to realize they are meant to be together. He never demands anything from her, and he is always there and willing to help her no matter what.

Honestly I can’t wait to read the third book when it comes out.

4.0 / 5 for me

Great sexual tension between Nadir and Lor in the beginning. Good Worlbuilding. Good pacing. Fun dialogue and bantering between Nadir and Lor. We get more layers to the character development, especially Nadir. Great writing. OK plot.

I wasn't sure what to think of this installment.

1. The energy from the first book wasn't there.
2. The book started strong, but in the end, I skimmed just to get to the action parts. I felt there was a bit too much info-dumping that detracted from the story. For example: I honestly didn't care what clothing Lor chose, but there were too many detailed descriptions that I didn't think were necessary.
3. The conflict between Nadir and Lor felt contrived, more so toward the end. I felt like screaming at Lor to just get on with it. They've been quite intimate already, but this sudden "he will never have my heart" trope was forced and unbelievable, given all the sexual exploration we see with these characters.
4. The ACOTAR vibes were strong, with the Aurora city having a Velaris feel. I kept wondering when things were going to happen as they strolled and shopped in the city where the Aurora king, who wants Lor, LIVES. This felt forced to me.
5. Then, Nadir and Lor stay at the palace for Frostfire, and the king doesn't sense anything off? Once again, I expected fireworks as the king surprised and ambushed them, but no, Nadir and Lor went about their business with NO ISSUES.
6. I had issues with Lor's character development. She underwent trauma in book one that would keep other women from having sex. It sounds like she was raped (although never clearly called out but suggested) and forced to give soldiers blow jobs to survive. Given this context, I find the relationship she develops with Nadir inconsistent. I can see why her relationship with men would be unhealthy, but Nadir offers her a degree of safety (in the beginning) that goes out the window forcefully. This "you are mine" trope that often permeates fae smut book was annoying and didn't align with the male character, who truly wanted to protect her.
7. The unexpected flashback to something that happened 286 years ago. It appears here and there, detracting from the story. I honestly didn't care about why or how the grandmother, Serce, destroyed the Heart kingdom. The character was hard to like. I'm sorry. Wolf was fine, but Serce was an awful character. This "arc" didn't add anything to the story, in my opinion, that couldn't be added in some other fashion, through dialogue and short snippets, as opposed to full chapters that I skimmed over. Now, this is a personal preference and has nothing to do with the author's writing. I don't like this type of flashback.

All in all, there were missed opportunities to add tension and a lot of running. The spicy level was OK for this type of book, but I felt it was forced to have spice. Lor's character, which I enjoyed in the first book, changes here, and her conflict, rather than endear her to me, made her annoying to the point that I felt for Nadir, not her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series so far!
Reviewed in Canada on May 15, 2023
I am happy to report that book 2 was just as enjoyable as book 1.

Lor has been rescued from the Sun King’s clutches and is back in the Aurora. Now begins the search for a lost item that belongs to her. Who better to help her search than the Aurora Prince? Like Lor, he despises his father and has made it his life’s mission to destroy him. Their destiny has been set in motion, and there’s no turning back.

I have enjoyed this series so much so far! The action sucks you right in and there’s a good mix of witty banter and heartbreak to break it all up. This will definitely be a series I come back to over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect for fans of plated prisoner!
Reviewed in Germany on June 6, 2023
This book was EVEN BETTER than book 1 if that is even possible. This series is perfect for fans of the plated prisoner series! This is a dark fae fantasy
romance that follows the story of an imprisoned woman who longs to escape her cage 🔥 it has everything! A fast placed plot with high stakes, lush worldbuilding, a slowburn enemies to lovers romance and deadly trials.

If you haven’t read book 1 watch out for spoilers below!

The sequel starts off right where we left off, with Lor being taken by the Aurora Prince. The wait for these two to clash was so so SO worth it! Their banter was perfection, their hate real. Nadir keeps Lor tucked away as he tries to discover who she is and what secrets she is hiding… but Lor will stop at nothing until she gets her siblings back. The last thing these two would ever want is to trust each other and form an alliance, but they might not have any choice in the matter as the true enemy is clever and far worse.

” Gods, when she scolds me like that, I want to kiss her. Partly to shut her up, but mostly to feel those lips against mine and bask in that savage anger as I tear off her clothes …”

I love their strong family ties so I was delighted when Willow and Tristan come back in the story. We also get to see more of Amya and Mael whom I adore. There are so many tropes included that I love like: fake dating (YESS!), possessive alpha male, fierce and mouthy FMC, one horse ride… 👀 seriously please pick up this series.
