From J. Bree, bestselling author of The Bonds That Tie, comes an epic and enthralling new romantasy series.

I devoted my life to a king who was not my own.

Now, in a world ravaged by the whims of those who rule, I must turn my back on a lifetime of friendships and loyalties to face my own fate.

The Savage Prince.

Heir to the high-fae throne of the Southern Lands, he is known for his brutality and cold heart. But with the kingdom on the brink of ruin, I have no choice but to seek him out.

The war between the fae and the witches rages, and there’s no end in sight. My destiny is clear—help the prince defeat his enemies before it’s too late.

One small problem.

I am Rookesbane Eveningstar.

The Favored Child returned, a Witch of the Woods.

The greatest enemy of my Fates-blessed mate.

From J. Bree, bestselling author of The Bonds That Tie, comes the second installment in her epic and enthralling romantasy series.

In our arrogance, the high fae forgot everything that mattered.

I carved out a reputation as the Savage Prince for my brutality against witches, but unable to wield our magic, I couldn’t stop my kingdom from being torn apart by war and famine while the Fates demanded my patience.

The worst was still to come.

After almost a thousand years of waiting for my Fates-blessed mate, and thousands of witches dead by my hand, the Fates revealed their cruelest truth yet.

With silver eyes that sliced to the bone and a humility that defied all reason, the witch I’m bound to has tested every inch of my restraint, but that was only the beginning.

Everything I once knew as true has come into question.

Loyalties will be tested, treaties broken, treason committed, and only the strongest will survive.

I am Prince Soren Celestial.

The rightful heir to the throne of the Southern Lands.

Nothing will keep me from my Fates-blessed mate.

Not even her hatred for me.

I am an avid fantasy reader and it has been a long time (probably since SJM's Aelin) that I felt as captivated as I did with this novel. J Bree knocked it out of the park with Brooke. I devoured the entire book in 2 days. The trope is definitely enemies to lovers....but in this book you only get enemies just be forewarned ;) Look forward to book 2 as to how our delightful Soren wins us over. (It's going to take a lot). Great start to the series and look forward to more to come.

But… where is the 2nd book? I pre-ordered it last year. Supposed to come out May 19th, 2024, yet I can’t find it anywhere.

***I will update this review as future books are released***

J. Bree is, hands down, one of my favorite authors at the moment. If I was more skilled in participating in things like TikTok/Booktok and Bookstagram (are those even things..?) I would dedicate them almost entirely to her. I am the type of reader that runs the gamut of genres. I love quick smutty reads, and I love the drawn out, verbose works. I love everything from PNR to Contemporary to Fantasy; RH all the way to M/M and everything in between. I say all of this because I read some of the reviews for the first and second book, especially the lower star versions, and I couldn't help but think: the negativity you're displaying here is entirely focused on the way she writes, not the story itself. It would be like if they picked up a Jane Austen novel and complained in a review saying "this book was bad because there wasn't any spice or dragons!" Well, no, there wouldn't be. That wasn't how she wrote. The same can be said for J. Bree. Her writing is spectacular. Her world building is bar none. J. Bree NEVER does anything without purpose. She is drawing out the building of worlds and trickle of flashbacks for a reason. I have complete and utter faith that when all the books are out, we will wholly appreciate the time she has spent focusing on the details and building that tension. Book two now being out, I still agree with this assessment.

I delayed reading the two novellas and the first novel as long as I could. I have a love/hate relationship with how long the time period between releases is in that I LOVE that her books turn out magically fantastic as a result, and yet I'm selfishly frustrated that I can't plow through them all at once. I obviously couldn't hold on any longer. So I read them, and suffered through what I think is a fairly benign and mild cliffhanger in TCOOAC (hello did you read Forced Bonds???? That was a million times worse!) after what was arguably one of the most awe-inspiring, LOTR-style amazingness, thrilling scenes I've ever read. I started reading book 2 the day it was available - my patience at waiting for the complete series nonexistent at this point.

TTOHAB is NOT for the impatient, or those looking for a quick smutty read that involves some magic and pointed ears as a background. These books are for those who love high fantasy world building, with a splash of romance built in. Please set your expectations for that (see above re: Jane Austen and dragons). The second book begins exactly where the first ends, and we follow the two main characters through their growth and change. Book one was Rooke's growth - the story moved and centered on her internal thoughts. Book two is absolutely Soren's. He is volatile, it's not in his nature to grovel in the traditional sense. He uses actions, not words. But she is steady - his perfect match in every way. And their story weaves through the story's exploration of the land and characters we've only thus far heard talk of. Keeping track of the map and characters in my head was definitely a George RR Martin-like experience, which only ADDS to the overall amazing experience of reading about this world. Though I will say that cliffhanger was a bit more of a doozy than in TCOOAC - and I'm only hoping there are more (positive) twists to come.

I reread the novellas and the first novel to prepare for the second novel. And here is my advice still: if you're impatient for the romance/spice, or dislike how wordy these books might be, just be patient and WAIT. Wait until the series is complete. Wait to see what a gift it will be when you realize she spent the time in these novels building and preparing the reader for all the amazing things to come. If you can handle your impatience and aren't going to riot over the fact there are no smexy times in TCOOAC and minimal in TTOHAB, then go ahead and read them now. And you can join me as we patiently (and anxiously) wait for the next installments.
