Loved these books!!! It was amazing to see the characters develop over time, and though it starts off feeling very much like other series in this genre, it definitely sets itself apart. Just when you think you know what's going to happen next, there's a twist thrown your way.

I started this first book yesterday morning and literally just finished the second book in this series this afternoon, and oh man do I have some thoughts!
If you don’t feel like reading this whole review, then my succinct opinion is that it’s a really enjoyable series and worth reading, especially if you enjoy a long book. Personally I find most books too short for my taste, so I appreciated the length of both of these!

Now, let’s get into my (likely somewhat scattered) thoughts about this first book. Spoilers ahead, so be warned.
My first issue with Scarlett is that, although we’re told countless time how incredible she is and what a good wraith she is and how everyone fears her, we get very few scenes of her living up to this. In fact, she spends most of the book getting pushed around by pretty much everyone. Even in the last climactic fight there’s no fighting, and no special cleverness on her part. Sure, Soren encourages her to use powers she’s never done before and she magically escapes, but dang if that whole scene wasn’t a let down.
Secondly, the overuse of cliche phrases about the stars and darkness really started to wear me down. Sure, it’s special if there’s one key phrase that Is carried on throughout the series, but it seemed like every three chapters the author was writing cliche lines in hopes a reader loved it so much they got it inked on their body permanently.
Third, it definitely felt like some of the plot devices in this book were borrowed from other popular fantasy series. I get it’s a genre that has been rehashed quite a bit and there will likely be very little that can be truly unique, but for example Soren’s house in the city felt like Rowan from TOG’s house in the city. There was also some fixation on one of Scarlett’s dresses that felt similar to the fixation Rowan had for one of Celaena’s dresses. This was not very overt, but as a reader I did feel like this book was inspired by TOG in some ways.
While these do seem like negative critiques, I truly did enjoy this book and felt like it did bring something to the fantasy table.

I loved this book! It was the perfect combination of fantasy with Fae, vampires, and humans. Scarlett thinks she is just a regular human who’s been orphaned and has a desire to take revenge on those that killer her mother. Throughout the book she learns she isn’t just a normal human but she needs to find out exactly what she is and learn how to get out of the cage she’s been placed in her whole life. Great characters and story details make this a must read for any fantasy lover! I can’t wait for book 2

Decent sorry, good suspense, a little slow in spots but really good world building and string characters! Not true enemies to lovers but good main character that kicks ass and has a real brain! Wish the series was completed. No idea on when the next book is out.

The Lady of Darkness was enjoyable. My first fantasy read and kept my interest wanting to know more about the character all through the book. Will be purchasing the authors second book when it’s released!
