Product Description

This was given as a gift and I have not been able to figure out how to use it so it has been sitting in the same spot next to my desk since its arrival. I used the test print once or twice so some of the filament has been used. It is in perfect working condition but you will probably have to reset the bed position so it prints properly. I am selling this item cheap so it will move quickly. The top of the unit is white and may have a couple small dust stains.

Decent 3D dual extruder printer
UPDATE 10-23-15 & 11-8-15:Don't believe all of the 1 start ratings here. These are mostly folks who are mad that they can't use 3rd party filament! This is a decent 3D printer and it's tough to beat its price! You can't beat this machine for the price. Yes, you have to buy proprietary ABS and PLA cartridges (and yes, the 2.0A can print with both PLA and ABS and I believe that there is an upgrade available for the 2.0), but then don't you already do that for your regular printer? If you don't, kudos to you and you'll probably be one of those folks who hacks this printer to run different firmware and you'll probably reset the cartridge chips and not buy them from XYZ. I look at it this way; XYZ is selling this thing less expensively than anyone else and they need to make a profit somewhere. Why not do it like the rest of the printer manufacturers, with the printer cartridges. All that aside, let's get to the printer. The first thing I printed was the "demo" sample which looks like an egg cup. This used both ABS cartridges and came out quite nice. This was the ONLY thing I have been able to print so far using the included glue on the glass tray/bed, everything else just would not stick. So, upon reading many posts, I saw folks were using painters tape. That has been more successful for me, except when I try to print objects with detached or moving parts (like a crescent wrench). After a few passes the objects tend to detach from the painters tape and then get caught in the extruder and I have to cancel the job. So far, my only successful prints outside of the demo have been two Dr. Who tardises (a tiny one, 2/3 in. and a salt shaker sized one, 2in.). Everything else I have tried with just glue on the glass tray has failed so far. I am going to try to print a crescent wrench once more, this time using A LOT of glue on the glass. If it works, I will try to post an update here.I did not have to calibrate the printer, it worked right out of the box. I will say though that something is slightly off on the "dump bin" for the left extruder. The printer has a system for cleaning the extruders by dragging them across a metal and rubber bar inside the printer. The right one works great, but the left one barely even touches the bar. This might be a calibration issue or the bar is mounted too low, I'm not 100% sure yet. The software does give some decent build options for speed vs quality, durability/thickness vs display-only/thinness, detail vs jaggy, breakaway supports, raft, etc. To get the best info. on what all the settings do and some general tutorials, I found the videos on http://support.xyzprinting.com/global_en/Support/tutorial to be a 1/2 way decent source of info.UPDATE 6-11-15: I tried printing a crescent wrench again with no success (on painters tape). I think glue is going to be the only way that it will work and it will take quite a bit of glue I believe. I was able to finally print something else with just glue. The trick seems to be using a lot of glue. I put one layer down over the entire glass tray and then went and did it again with another layer. I think it might take 3 layers for the crescent wrench, I'll post another update if I get a working print. One more thing to note is that if you do use painters tape, be sure to peel it ALL off after each print. I only peeled off and repalced the strips where the printed object was leaving the rest of the tape in place for future prints. I just tried peeling it all off and the repeated heating and cooling of the print bed/glass-tray made the painters tape stick really bad and it was quite difficult to remove it.UPDATE 6-24-15: I have printed more objects and I am having more success with the glue now, you just have to put at least two good coats down. The other issue then becomes getting the printed object off of the print-bed/tray. I actually used my knife sharpener on the included "putty knife" to give it a better edge (I didn't make it sharp, I just gave it a bevel which also made the tip of the blade a bit thinner) and I have had much better success in removing printed objects. I wouldn't recommend making it actually sharp to a point though, or you'll likely end up scratching the glass print-bed. I'm going to try printing a single print crescent wrench once more with three layers of glue (still no success) this time and see if it works. I'll post again if it does.UPDATE 10-23-15: I have printed an ALMOST working crescent wrench now. I just need to do a few more tweaks to how I print it and I think it will be golden. I have found this glue (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088RL2QI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01) to work better even that what came with the printer. Two coats per job/print seem to work perfectly. I'm going to post more very soon with some photos. This printer is worth the money, esp. now with saving $100 off list!UPDATE 11-8-2015:As promised, I have uploaded a couple of photos of some things I have made with this printer. The glue above works really well and as you can see from the photos, I was finally able to print a 1 print working crescent wrench (my ultimate goal)!! So IMO this printer is awesome. The wrench I printed is here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:594235Follow his instructions in his video and you should not have any issues. The only thing I changed for speed (it was a 4hr print for me) in printing was that I changed the density to 30%.UPDATE 10-20-17:Yes, more than 2 years later my printer is still working perfectly! I noticed that the photos somehow got distorted, so I've attempted to re-upload them. I have successfully printed many different things, and the correct glue seems to be the key to anything printing well! This printer is a blast and their new color printer looks to be even cooler (no more need for 2 or more print heads and spools)!

I am a complete newbie to 3D printing so this review is from that perspective. As some of the other reviews in this product state, this item is definitely for people who are not afraid to "tinker" and perform significant adjustment. This is not nesissarily a bad thing, 3D printing is relatively new and so that is expected. At this point I consider this a product for the hobbyist
I followed the instructions to unpackage and open the printer, the instructions were pretty clear but when I switched the machine on it would not complete the initialization phase and instead presented my with an error code. I looked at the manual and the code was a bit general and did not contain any troubleshooting steps. To get support you must create and account at the XYZ website and open up a ticket which is what I did. About 1 hour later I received a link to a YouTube video on troubleshooting steps. Again, in my opinion, the instructions are not meant for the layman but rather for the DYIer (Do It Yourselfer :) ). This process continued a few times and I must say although I did not receive a phone call, I was rather impressed at the time for response. This was a day after Christmas and continued thru 11PM central time. *I* finally figured the problem and fixed it myself but in all fairness, their troubleshooting steps gave me great direction as to the underlying cause. I consider the support excellent because of the good response.

I have been using the product for a few weeks and I am impressed, it does exactly what was expected. Its fun to go thru the process which ends with you holding the design in your hands. Here are some answers to questions that I had as a "Newbie".

1) You can use Google Sketch Up (free version) to design and print out the creations. You will have to install a plug in to allow the design to be exported to STL file format, (also free).
2) There is no included design software, you only receive software to print but not to create.
3) You can download hundreds of designs created by others to print.
4) A printout can take anywhere from 45 minutes (3 inch house) to 3 hours (Spiral cup) and I suspect longer
5) My daughter designed a 4 Inch table (doll house furniture) in SketchUp and was able to hold in in her hand in about 1 hour.
6) I have had no problems with alignments yet and I have printed about 1 dozen items
7) The items are surprisingly sturdy.
8) The printer seems very well built with mostly metal parts, even the support instructions included significant pulls or taps to solve the problem.

I am giving it 5 stars because it does exactly as described, it is relatively cheap and very fun to use.

It was exciting to receive the printer and set it up. I knew in advance from friends with all kinds of different 3D printers that there was going to be a lot of fiddling. So I followed the manual and found the calibration was not right so I recalibrated and lo and behold, I was able to print out two objects that I had designed in the amazing SketchUp 2015 modeling package. But then it stopped working. It would lay down the filament that it always does on the side of the platform but then when it came to printing the object, the print head would go all over the platform but leave no trace of filament. This despite multiple attempts at calibration, nozzle cleaning, filament loading/unloading and every other debugging maneuver found in the manual and online support forum.

So after two months, I saw that I was not making progress on my own and it was even more fiddly than I had expected. I reached out to tech support and had a series of interchanges (which I have pasted in below for your entertainment). They had me do all the debugging maneuvers all over again and I sent jpg's and videos as they asked. When after 2 months of back and forth with support the printer was still not working, I asked them for a different plan. A refund or a new machine. At that point they went silent.

So in summary, 2 small printed objects and 4 months of no joy and no output from the machine. I suppose I should look back at this as a character building exercise but I want to spare you, potential customer, from this particular form of self-flagellation.

------------------------ START of TRANSCRIPT--------------

I have had this printer for about 2 months and have printed out 2 objects successfully. But since then I have tried about 20 times to print different objects and none of them work because of a"Filament jam"
I have repeatedly removed and loaded the filament.
I have repeatedly cleaned the extruders.

I am using your brand cartridges.
I have checked the alignment of the platform multiple times
(successfully).

Not sure how to get this printer to print at this point. Please advise.

Dear Mr. Kohane, Were sorry to hear that you are having issue.
Please advise us your XYZ ware and firmware version and please update to the most updated one.And send us a copy of your purchase invoice and advise us yourCustomer Service Staff total printing hours.
For the filament jammed since it will occurs every 1 or 2 layers, it
might be related with the calibration.
It might be that there is not enough space for the filament to come
out.
You may try to recalibrate the print bed at the range of 90-100 andsee whether it will helps, here is the link for your reference:http://youtu.be/mrQtVIEvyLI

To answer the question, the filament does come out of the nozzle.Very well and smoothly and in large quantities when I load and reload the filament. The nozzles are clean. As shown in the attached Þgures, when doing the standard key (one of the demo models built into the printer) it lays down the two tracks on each side of the platform. But then when it's moving around the platform to build the key, no filament seem to come out of the extruder(even though it just did so for the straight tracks on either side of the platform).
The calibration values are as follows (but I have tried smaller and larger values without any additional success).

Hi, just got back from vacation. I followed your directions to unclog the nozzle. It still does not work. It lays down the tracks near the side but then no more ABS comes out and it gives the filament jam warning. I have followed all your advice and have not been able to make more than 2 small objects (just when I received the printer)as I described at the beginning of this thread. What can I do?

Dear Mr. Kohane,

Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused.

The jam is reported on extruder1 but no filament comes out of either nozzle after laying down the two tracks on the side (and generous squirting out of filament when I load them into each nozzle). As you can see in the attached video it starts by laying down the extruder1 red filament strip on the right but then as it gets going with the actual printed object, no filament comes out. I have now had several months without any success despite a lot of work and a lot of interaction with you. I think we need to consider something radically different like a new machine or a refund.

The Printer Arrived without a power cord. When I contacted XYZprinting it took to them 3 days to tell me that I was not covered under their "Warranty" because I live in Canada. they then gave me a link to their Warranty. I decided right there to just return the printer because this was nothing to do with Warranty. they did not provide all the parts, and if this is how they treat people who did not get all the required parts and how good there quality control is that a printer can be shipped without there power cord, then I can only imagine what I would have to go through If I have an Actual Warranty issue. Then I decided to read their Warranty and I found no mention of Canada not being covered. In fact on the warranty Card provided with the printer it says all of North America is covered.
The Frame of the Printer is also a bit off which causes the door to not shut properly. I think its just a loose Tab on the inside which would be an easy fix but with the whole Warranty thing and that fact that I'm returning it, It's not really worth checking out to see if it can be fixed.

The Printer Arrived without a power cord. When I contacted XYZprinting it took to them 3 days to tell me that I was not covered under their "Warranty" because I live in Canada. they then gave me a link to their Warranty.
