Use this feature to keep the light on low through the night at home or while camping for safety and security. It is great for use as a portable night light for children during power outages. The durable, energy-efficient LED never needs replacing — it's so efficient that you can get more than 30 hours of bright light on one set of batteries.

Push Button Activated with Auto Shut Off

The Mr Beams LED Lantern turns on easily using a push button on the front of the unit. From OFF, push the button one time and the unit will turn ON to bright mode. Push the button a second time and the unit will change to nightlight mode. Push the button again and the lantern will turn OFF. The Mr Beams Lantern will automatically turn off at 60 minutes to conserve battery life. At 58 minutes the LED will start to blink to warn that the auto shut off is imminent. Press the button once and the auto shut off will be overridden keeping the light On until it is turned Off.

USB Port for Charging Devices

The Mr Beams Lantern turns the four D batteries that power your lantern into a portable USB charger. Easily charge your electronics during a power outage or on the go by plugging your USB cord into the USB charging port on the front of the LED lantern. The charge port is compatible with Apple and Android smartphones, MP3 players, and other USB charged devices. The Mr Beams LED lantern will provide over 30 hours of continuous light in bright mode, or 15 hours of light plus three cell phone charges, or 300 hours in nightlight mode on one set of batteries.

Would be an excellent product if not for two deficiencies
I already own several LED lanterns, including the Energizer Weather Ready Folding Area Lantern and Energizer Weatheready 360 Degree LED Area Lantern. But they all have some deficiencies I don't like. That’s why I decided to try this Mr. Beams MB470 UltraBright LED Camping Lantern with USB Charger.[LED Light]The product description of MB470 claims "4-watt LED array with 260 lumens of light output". The actual light from this lantern is hardly 'ultra bright' despite the impressive luminosity rating. This may be because the light from the three LEDs is diffused, so it does not appear as bright as a 260 lumens LED flashlight.I disassembled the lantern, and found some form of power regulation circuit inside (see the photos I uploaded). However, further testing showed that the power consumption is not well regulated, but changes linearly with battery voltage. In fact the regulation is not much better when compared to that of the Energizer Weather Ready Folding Area Lantern (see the chart of Input Power vs. Battery Voltage for comparison). One good feature the MB470 offers is a low-battery indicator. A red LED started blinking whenever battery voltage drops below 4.7V. The lantern remains visible as long as battery voltage is over 3V.Another good feature is how the MB470 implements High and Low power modes:- In High Power mode the LED current switched on/off at 60% duty cycle at 500Hz.- In low power mode the duty cycle drops to ~3%%. That means the power consumption (and light intensity) in Low is just 1/20th that in High. In contrast, most other lanterns simply insert a resistor in series to cut down the LED current.[USB Port]The USB port has a mechanical switch inside. It turns on only when an USB plug is inserted. This is a good design. LEDs are dimly lit when charging USB port (Maybe as an indicator light?)When powering USB port: Maximum input current from battery is limited to 0.7A. So when battery is at 6V the USB port is able to provide ~0.6A output. But when VBAT drops to 5V, the maximum USB output current drops to ~0.5A (since the conversion efficiency is only around 75%). If I try to draw more current from the USB port, it output voltage starts to drop off. But at least there's no danger that the converter will overload and burn out.In contrast, the Goal Zero 32001 Lighthouse 250 USB Power Hub and Lantern is able to produce up to 1.5A at its USB port. But of course the Goal Zero lantern costs more than 2x higher.[Bottom Line]The Mr. Beams MB470 Lantern is a quality-built product with several good features. Too bad it suffers from poor LED power regulation, and its USB port output current is too limited. I hope future version will be able to address those deficiencies.

They say that love is blind and that may well be the case with me. I am a latecomer to Mr. Beams' world but it was love at first sight when I received my first Mr. Beams Light (Mr. Beams MB363 Wireless LED Spotlight with Motion Sensor) two months ago. So smitten was I, that I immediately made a second purchase (Mr Beams MB393 300-Lumen Weatherproof Wireless Battery Powered LED Ultra Bright Spotlight with Motion Sensor). By this point there was no turning back. Mr. Beams changed my world. I live on a very dark street with lots of wonderful wildlife (fox, coyote, deer, rabbit, skunk, snake, etc) which is wonderful until it comes to taking the dogs out for their last pee of the night. I've gone through more flashlights and so called solar lights and none give off much light or have a long enough life expectancy to be of my use. As a result I get startled by bleating deer, hissing snakes, or worse, the dogs get skunked, all because there isn't enough light to see what's confronting us. Until Mr. Beams..... The yard now glows at night in precisely the areas where we walk.

As a result of my success with the outdoor Beams, I decided to take a chance on this lantern. What sold me on it (aside from the fact that it is yet another creation from my beloved Mr Beams) was the USB port for cell phone charging. Sheer Brilliance. On this little lantern my betrothed thought of everything. There is an easy carrying handle, two light modes (brighter and dimmer), the USB port, and a hook on the bottom for hanging the light upside down so it becomes like a ceiling light. It is also weatherproof. I was initially concerned that at 260 lumens the light wouldn't be bright enough. Turns out it is plenty bright. I read other excellent reviews that mention that there are brighter battery lanterns around, but for my money I was willing to trade a little brightness for the convenience of the USB port. I was able to read comfortably by the light it put out. It probably wouldn't suit me to never have more light than this but I am assuming no one is buying it as a permanent replacement for wired household lighting. A week with this light would be fine, if necessary.

The unit itself is fairly small (approx 8" x4" x4") which for me was another selling point.

I would recommend this to anyone and would recommend the other Mr Beams lights as well. This company just has their ideas and designs down right.

The only thing I don't understand is why it has taken me so long to find Mr Beams. But I guess its true what they say.... true love IS worth waiting for.

Neutral white LED = LOVE!

There are countless LED lanterns similar to this one on the market, such as the Rayovac lanterns, and put out plenty of light. If you just need some light to do a repair underneath the kitchen sink, they'll work fine.

This one's different in that it uses a neutral-white LED with a relatively-high CRI (color rendering index) phosphor. It's still good for the quick repair jobs, BUT this difference really becomes appreciated when this is your only source of light, such as during an extended power outage. The other lanterns put out an icy-blue, bright glaring light. This lantern puts out something closer to a fluorescent lamp and it's much more pleasant. It sounds like it wouldn't be that big of a difference, but it really does make things feel more civil, especially after multiple nights.

I used these for Hurricane Irma and they performed flawlessly. We had a generator, but would shut it down and bring it inside before retiring to sleep as someone tried stealing it one night, so once the generator came in, these were our source for lighting for the rest of the night. I had other battery-operated lighting as well, but these did much of the heavy lifting. We had the house lit so bright and the light quality didn't look like the sickly cold white LEDs on the first night that a neighbor knocked and asked if we had power! Our power was restored after 4 nights, so I then passed these onto other people who were without power for 14+ nights and they've since bought their own.

Checked and used for ten minutes. Satisfactory built quality and finish. Works as mobile charger also for Samsung . Light is okay. The country of origin shown as USA is false, misrepresentation and amounts to cheating as the product is actually made in China as shown in the inner lid. Only Chinese tend to hide their manufacturers details so meticulously. Don't know backup as claimed. Would have given four stars for this expensive product had there been no cheating at the Amezon platform.

5.0 out of 5 stars This lantern is absolutely fabulous!
Reviewed in Canada on August 27, 2014
This lantern is absolutely fabulous! I love everything about it! I love it's small size. It is very lightweight, especially in comparison to other battery powered lanterns I own. The light is super bright - especially for its size. I think it's just as bright if not brighter than larger lanterns I own. It has two brightness settings if you want to have a dimmer light. A really unique and awesome feature is the built in USB charger. You can charge any USB powered device. It charges devices quickly and fully. Another unique feature is you can unscrew the top of the lantern and then hang the one part up so it becomes a hanging lantern.

5.0 out of 5 stars 21st Century update
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 6, 2014
Having experienced the use of Emergency Lighting in the shape of Lights manufactured by a certain French Gas Manufacturer over the years, this excellent product from Mr Beam, has dragged the subject of Emergency Lighting, fighting and screaming into the 21st Century. Emergency Lighting is a necessity, here in the Foothills of the Sierra Nevada as Power outages are quite a regular occurrence. Apart from the risk of fire, the gas canisters for the French made Lamps we were using, were becoming more and more scarce. Time to change, but what was the alternative.

Well I have found it in the shape of Mr Beams MB470 Weatherproof 260 Lumen Lantern.

Robustly manufactured, the lamp is versatile in that it can be free standing with a carrying handle or it can be placed in a suspended situation, with a cleverly designed hook concealed in the base of the lamp. On two sides of the lamp, substantial rubber grips have been molded to the main Body.

On the front of the MB470, there is a USB Port for charging a mobile phone and/or other devices and that works very well. The USB Port is weather proofed by a rubber cover.

Below the USB Port, there is a Battery Power Indicator Light, that warns when batteries are running low and need replacing. (Four D-Cell Batteries are required)

Below the Battery Indicator Light is an On/Off rubber switch/button.To activate the lamp;(1)Press this button Once(2)Press the button again for a low light.(3)Press the button again to turn off.

Incorporated in this switch gear is an Automatic Shut Off Facility. After the lamp has been on for 58 minutes, it will start to blink for a further 2 minutes and then turn itself off completely. This is a wonderful innovation to conserve the life of your batteries. This action applies to both the Bright & Dim lighting modes. You cannot forget to turn the lamp off should you walk away and leave it or as I did, fall asleep. After the one hour has elapsed, the Lamp will have turned Off before your return or when you wake up. To re-activate the Lamp again, merely press the On/Off Switch just Once for another One Hour of Light. Without detracting from my assessment, perhaps an override could have been added to this function.

The illumination this lantern gives out in our Lounge more than satisfies our needs. I found it more than useful in those dark corners of the house when performing DIY tasks. The Lantern has to be a "must have" for outdoor enthusiasts where its uses could be seemingly endless in a variety of Locations and Situations.

One final note. In view of the excellent construction, its ruggedness and design, I was surprised that although marketed through an American Company in Ohio, the lantern is in fact manufactured in China. However, make no mistake, this is a quality Product.

Highly Recommended.

UPDATE (23rd July, 2014)

As I was unable to go out and buy the company, I did the next best thing and bought an additional MB470 Lantern(White), so impressed am I with this product.
