As many have stated, we all have our Marlowe. My father's was Robert Mitchum. My first long term romance had his flag firmly planted for Elliot Gould. For me, it has to be James Garner. For a detailed film review, read any of the excellent reviews already posted here on Amazon. This concerns the video.

I have purchased both the DVD and Amazon Instant Video, at different times, obviously. I watch this so often I tired of going to get the disc. The video presented here, streaming, is clearly from the same source, the Warner Archive remaster. While they did remaster the film for release on disc, they chose not to release it on Blu-ray and, similarly, did not release an HD streaming copy (at least as of August, 2017). The best disc edition, currently, in the world, is the Warner Archive DVD and the video on the Amazon streaming service, SD, is identical, right down to the little pixellations and flaws during various interchanges throughout the film, which are, fortunately, rare. As such, the picture quality is very good, given the age, and the print shows only minor color distortions, occasionally tending a bit toward yellow but, overall, staying true to color. The sound quality is excellent, given the age of the film, but only very good when compared to modern film sound quality.

As stated, I am biased as James Garner is my perfect Marlowe so, of course, I love this film. But, who cares. You can read reviews, watch clips and decide for yourself. If you are considering this particular film, be advised that the Warner Archive Collection DVD and the Amazon streaming video are the same digital print and the quality difference will depend only on your television's upscaling capabilities as compared to the upscaling on a blu-ray player and your streaming speed and quality.

Good luck finding what you want.

Okay, this movie was pretty good - mostly. Loved the James Garner take on Marlowe, and the supporting cast - including Bruce lee - was great. It started a little slow in the hippie hotel, but we were quickly introduced to a character played by Uncle Fester from the 60's Addams family. The story picked up from there with a good plot, and was going great until the last few minutes. A weird scene with Rita Moreno as a "dancer," which quickly became awkward when she danced around almost topless for way too long. Then it abruptly ended. One of the weirdest endings to an over all enjoyable Marlowe myster.

I review this as a lover of almost all the previous Marlowe films (the exception is
Elliot Gould in the Long Goodbye which is terrible). For me,Garner fits in well
with Bogart,Powell,Mitchum,Boothe (and even Caan in Poodle Springs). I've always
thought the story (Little Sister) to be one of Chandler's best-I suppose in
part because it has a bit more of a romantic interest for Marlowe than some
of the stories. As to the lack of logic in the story cited by one of the reviewers,
this is somewhat characteristic of Chandler. For example,there are still discussions
over what is going on in the Big Sleep. I don't think the update to the
1970s (Bruce Lee,hippies..) jarring to the original story. Drugs were certainly present
in many of the books. The DVD contains no extras (not even subtitles) which is
perhaps a shame.

All I could see was James Garner, not Philip Marlowe. More Rockford than Marlowe. That is OK - I liked Rockford.
I am not sure Marlowe threw off Yiddish words the way Garner's script has him speaking in this film adaptation of 'The Little Sister.' I will find out as I read the book now. That is one benefit of film - it sometimes inspires you to read.
Rita Moreno has a dull seemingly minor role but she sizzles when she takes off her clothes onstage in a striptease.
The dialogue is not great.
One impressive appearance: Bruce Lee. There is an actor who portrays 'Bruce Lee' in the Tarantino film, 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.' That actor and the real Bruce Lee could be identical twins - interesting for Bruce Lee fans.

No doubt that Garner brought much of his rough charm into his long-standing roll of James Rockford, in the Rockford Files but you get a earlier glimpse of it in this great take on the character of Philip Marlowe. With a great supporting cast like the beautiful Rita Moreno, Carrol O'Conner, and even Bruce Lee as Winslow Wong. This isn't a masterpiece of noir like Chinatown but it is a fun watch which I highly recommend!

Außerdem fehlt eine Seite aus dem Gästeverzeichnis. Nachdem Marlowe einen zweiten Toten gefunden hat, wird er von einer maskierten Frau angegriffen und vorübergehend aus dem Verkehr gezogen. Er erzählt der Polizei nichts von dem Abholschein für ein paar entwickelte Fotos, den er in Orrins Zimmer gefunden hat. Nachdem er die Fotos abgeholt und begutachtet hat, merkt der gewitzte Privatdetektiv, dass es bei diesem Fall um weit mehr als nur eine vermisste Person geht…

»The Little Sister« und »The Long Goodbye« waren die einzigen beiden Marlowe-Romane aus der Feder Raymond Chandlers, die bis in die späten 1960er noch nicht verfilmt worden waren. Die Produzenten Gabriel Katzka und Sidney Beckerman sicherten sich im Frühjahr 1967 die Rechte an beiden Büchern und handelten einen lukrativen Distributionsdeal mit MGM aus. Eigentlich war der Dreh zu »The Little Sister« bereits für den September desselben Jahres anvisiert, doch wie so oft gab es Startschwierigkeiten, welche das Vorankommen des Projekts verschoben. Im März 1968 wurde bekannt, dass James Garner die Hauptrolle übernehmen würde — außerdem sprang er ohne Namensnennung auch als Co-Produzent mit ins Boot — und dass der TV-Regisseur Paul Bogart für die Inszenierung verantwortlich zeichnen würde. Am 14. Juli 1968 wurde die erste Klappe geschlagen. Mit Carroll O’Connor, Rita Moreno, Sharon Farrell, William Daniels, Jackie Coogan, Bruce Lee und der jungen Gayle Hunnicutt hatte Bogart eine illustre Besetzung für seinen neo noir gewinnen können, der kurz vorm Kinostart letztlich schlicht in »Marlowe« umbenannt wurde und alles in allem recht durchwachsen bei Kritik und Publikum abschnitt.
Der renommierte Drehbuchautor Stirling Silliphant war soeben mit einem Oscar für »In the Heat of the Night« (Regie: Norman Jewison) ausgezeichnet worden und hatte mit seiner Chandler-Adaption kein so glückliches Händchen. Er gab sich alle Mühe, die vier, fünf vertrackten Nebenhandlungen elegant miteinander zu verweben und dabei auch noch Chandlers zwei große Schwächen — die Dialoge und die Figurenzeichnungen — auszubügeln, während Regisseur Bogart sich ein bisschen zu sehr auf Garners star power und die clever gewählten locations verließ. Dementsprechend urteilte die »New York Times« folgendermaßen: »Stirling Silliphants Drehbuch folgt zu vielen und Paul Bogarts Regie zu wenigen Stilen, um einen mehr als beiläufig unterhaltsamen Film zu machen.« Andere Rezensenten hielten den Film für aus der Zeit gefallen, verworren und überambitioniert. James Garner, der als Marlowe in die Fußstapfen von Humphrey Bogart, Robert Montgomery und Dick Powell trat, spielte seine Rolle zeitgemäß cool und mit einer Prise Humor, von der er in seiner späteren TV-Serie »The Rockford Files« noch Gebrauch machen sollte. Die kürzlich verstorbene Gayle Hunnicutt, die neben Garner noch vor dem Titel genannt wurde, spielt eine unscheinbar-fade Rolle, die im Lichte Rita Morenos komplett verblasst und relativ wenig zum Geschehen beiträgt. Dafür wurde sie von Jean Louis eingekleidet, was ihr gut steht.

Insgesamt ist »Marlowe« ein interessanter Film, der zwischen die Zeiten fällt: Der Stoff ist aus den 1940ern und wurde nicht konsequent in die Sechziger transponiert, der Look ist grobkörnig und glamourös zugleich, die Atmosphäre mäandert zwischen den swinging sixties und der guten alten Zeit. Die Musik sorgt für den richtigen Vibe, die Kameraarbeit ist erstklassig und der Auftritt von Bruce Lee kultverdächtig. In seinen Memoiren schwärmte der ansonsten sehr selbstkritische Garner von diesem Thriller: »Paul Bogart did a wonderful job with Stirling Silliphant’s adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s novel ›The Little Sister‹. Paul is a total pro, having directed scores of live programs during the Golden Age of television and countless episodes of series before moving on to feature films. In one scene, I’m in a restaurant with a date and someone sends over a bottle of wine. The waiter opens it and pours a little for me to taste. Gore Vidal had just referenced my butt in his novel, ›Myra Breckinridge‹, referring to it as ›impertinent‹ and ›baroque‹. (One of the two would have been sufficient.) I ad-libbed those two words […] to describe a glass of wine in the scene and Paul kept it in. […] I got to beat up Bruce Lee. (Only in the movies!) Bruce showed me some martial arts moves between takes.« — Insgesamt ein schicker, stilsicherer Film, der sich für einen trüben Frühherbstsonntag hervorragend eignet.

リージョンフリーのDVD-Rですので、我が国のレコーダーでも鑑賞可能。但し、日本語字幕はありません（英語字幕もなし）。
特典映像はワーナーのアーカイブ・コレクションにしては珍しく劇場用予告編が収録されています。画質はイマイチです。
復刻シネマライブラリーとして日本でもリリースされてますが、こちらもDVD-R。既に廃盤ですし、北米版は安いので、私はこれで充分でした。

ブルース・リーが出演したシーンは2箇所あり（収録時間は両方足して5分ほど）、1度目はマーロウ（ジェームズ・ガーナー、原題である）の事務所（と言っても1部屋だが）をこれでもかと破壊しまくるシーン。
ブルース・りーだから目を凝らして観てしまうシーンですが、おそらく公開当時は背の低い変な東洋人が狂ったように暴れまくっているぐらいにしか認識されなかったのでは。
2度目は高層ビルのベランダらしき所でマーロウを襲うシーン。このシーンは漫画みたいで思わず『なんじゃこりゃ』と呟いてしまいます。頭の悪い変な東洋人で終わってしまってます。
つまりあのブルース・リーと言えどもそれなりの名声を得なければ、この程度の出演シーンではその他大勢と何ら変わらないと言う事ですね。

さて映画の方ですが、粗筋は日本盤の商品説明でアマゾンさんが記載してくれている（おそらくパッケージに記載されたものをそのまま転載していると思われる）ので、そちらをご参照いただくとして
本作はかの有名なレイモンド・チャンドラーの探偵小説『かわいい女』を原作にしており、ジェームズ・ガーナーがフィリップ・マーロウを演じております。
マーロウ役と言えば「三つ数えろ」のハンフリー・ボガート「ロング・グッドバイ」のエリオット・グールド「さらば愛しき人よ」のロバート・ミッチャムらが有名ですが、
一体誰が一番マーロウのイメージに合っているのか、「長いお別れ」しか読んだ事のない私には皆目見当がつきませんが、ジャームズはしがない探偵役を良い味だして演じてます。
但し、ジェームズの役者として性格からハードボイルドというよりは、ややコミカルな雰囲気が感じられ、その点は原作者のファンには気に入らないかもしれません。

アクションはかなり控えめです。マーロウもやられっぱなしで殆ど手を出しません。銃は所持してますが、劇中一回も撃ってなかったですね、確か。
そういった意味ではブルース・リー出演シーンは貴重かもしれません。アクションについては彼だけが一手に引き受け、頑張っている感じですか。
ですので個人的にはチョット期待外れ。但し終盤のリタ・モレノがストリップするシーンはヴェリー・グーッド。彼女はダンサー出身ですから踊りはプロですが、踊りっぷりがかなりセクシーです。
スケベおやじにとってこのシーンが一番印象に残りました。それと結末の展開もかなり意外。ストリップをじーっと凝視していると突然トンデモナイ事が起こります。これは観てのお楽しみ。

特典映像の予告編にはブルース・リーの暴れっぷりと結末の一部が含まれていますので、本編鑑賞前には絶対観ない事！

海外盤なので、当然、日本語字幕はありません。英語字幕も無し。DVD-R仕様。
なのにお薦めするのは、「若きブルース・リーの輝き」が、見れるから。
ジェームズ・ガーナー演じる探偵フィリップ・マーローに凄む、殺し屋ウィンスロー・ウォンを、リー先生が演じています。
32分～、40分～の2シーンで計5分足らずですが、圧倒的な存在感。「ドラゴンへの道」で見せる「蹴りによる頭上の電球割り」を、既にやっています。
あと、リージョン1だと思っていたのですが、日本のDVDプレーヤーで見れます。ラッキー。
