After mentioning Johnny's recording of *The Man Who Couldn't Cry* in a review of Loudon Wainwright's *Attempted Moustache* disc, I knew I'd get around to purchasing *American Recordings*. Back then I said "it's hard to imagine The Man in Black singing `he was beaten, bullied and buggered, and made to make license plates' with dignity".

Well I'm here to say that Johnny did pull it off with dignity, albeit with a few chortles from the live audience.

I'm glad I did get around to *American Recordings*, because it's quite impressive. It is done simply with Johnny's inimitable Voice the only accompaniment to his acoustic guitar. Its effectiveness is enhanced because he takes risks by doing songs you wouldn't think Johnny Cash would do. And better music comes forth because he did.

He and/or Rick Rubin picked the songs well. They include C&W classics--*Why Me Lord*, *Tennessee Stud* and *Oh Bury Me (Not on the Lone Prairie)*; a few covers of tunes from Loudon, Nick Lowe, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits; and the rest are JRC originals.

Although not a real Country Music fan, I always enjoyed his songs growing up. *Ring of Fire*, *Boy Named Sue*, and *Folsom Prison Blues* all seemed refreshing because he was always trying something new and different. But he never reached too far outside the Essential Johnny Cash.

It's that voice that gets you. Soulful and pained when it needs to be, regretful, or sensitive. Always, his diction clear. Cash sounds honest but never pretentious, a true American sound.

After hearing so many people gush about the Johnny Cash /Rick Rubin American series for several years, I finally got around to giving them a listen. I started with the first one "American Recordings". The first listen was a wow moment. A few weeks later I bought the next three "Unchained", "American III: Solitary Man" and American IV: The Man Comes Around". I had a long day of data entry to do so I ended up listening to these three CDs in one sitting on head phones. Amazingly I did not get bored with them and the time just flew by.

They did everything right on this series, from song selection to what seamed like the unerring production on every track. Be it Johnny with one guitar or a full band it seamed like no mistakes were made. Cash's voice was starting fade a bit on American IV but I found it to be an apt conclusion to his story in music. All four CDs are worth having and I will get American V some time soon.

This is a very fitting swansong for Cash.

The “Man in Black,” Johnny Cash, lends his distinctive voice and singing style to another collection of nice songs.

The first of Cash's American Recordings CD's with Rich Rubin as producer set the standard which the other recordings followed. Sparse in instrumentation (mostly just Johnny's Guitar) and with Cash's voice ragged with age, they are stark but powerful. Cash tries everything from heavy metal to spirituals to old standards. All are just amazing. His voice, though fragile and weathered, is still very recognizable. The songs are very pointed, many focusing on his end of life views. On this CD, try out "Why Me Lord" - which contains the lyric - "Why Me Lord, what have I ever done to deserve even one of the blessings I have known." Other great cuts are "Bird On A Wire," "Redemption" and "Like a Soldier" and several train songs (one of Johnny's favorite themes).

The first time I heard this album it reduced me to tears; the tenth time, the same. Cash brings all the joy and pain of a long life, lived sometimes well, sometimes not. Listening to him pleading for forgiveness, you can hear every sin that weighs on his soul -- and feel every sin that weighs on yours, too. Listening to this album is a cathartic experience because even though Cash makes you face your failings, he never judges; he almost seems to be saying: I've never met anyone, no matter how bad, to whom I can't say, I've done worse. Cash may be the most human performer ever to record to a song.
