After returning one time for a replacement because it came dirty and scratched up, the second one was clean. It had a few scratches on it but seemed fine. Well, the bucket had small holes in it. I did not know this until it leaked all over the freezer while getting cold. At any rate, we continued with the process. Layered the ice and salt and turned it on. Well, it would not stay on the gear that turns to churn the ice cream. I had to hold it down during the whole process. With this being said, we made the simple vanilla recipe and it was very good in flavor. A little on the soft side but a little more time and it would have been thicker. This is not a set it and leave it unit. You have to babysit it and add more ice from time to time. If it acts up the way mine did, you will need to hold it down for it to work. It is poorly made. I don't know how it got such great reviews. Do not buy this machine!!! Spend a little more and get that other one you have been eyeing. You will be much happier.
