hOmeLabs vs Frigidaire 70-pint models
4 out of 5 stars
hOmeLabs vs Frigidaire 70-pint models
70-pint Frigidaire 70-Pint Dehumidifier vs hOmeLabs dehumidifier point-by-point comparison.Foreword: These are two of the most highly rated and popular dehumidifiers on Amazon. So I thought it may be a good idea to compare them side by side since I happen to own both. I’ve owned Frigidaire for about 9 month and hOmeLabs for about a week.EPA recommends indoor relative humidity levels 30-60%. Both of these units are well capable of maintaining that. Another note is that both of these units are appliances that do electrical work, therefore, they do generate heat. If you live in a climate where you don’t mind a certain amount of heating (Pacific NW, Midwest or New England), these are perfect. If you live in the South (TX, FL, etc), regular A/C unit should generally do an OK job of controlling humidity, but if you want an additional de-humidification capacity, you’re much better off investing in a portable A/C unit. Most of them have a de-humidification mode and typically draw out comparable amount of moisture. The other great benefit there is that they pump the heat outside (through the window exhaust) resulting in cool dry air inside.Back to comparison. In general, both of these units are really good and will get your humidity down. I would recommend both of them heartily, but they do differ in finer points, which is what detailed below:QUALITY OF THE BUILD: Both of these units are solid. However, Frigidaire is physically smaller and much more polished. Somehow the plastic enclosure of hOmeLabs unit feels flimsier.Winner: FrigidaireEASE OF MANEUVERABILITY: Both of these units come with casters attached and are breeze to roll around. Frigidaire has a handle on top and hOmeLabs has 2 handles on the sides.Winner: TieEASE OF OPERATION: It is super easy to operate both of these units. No manual needed at all. The buttons and lights are practically identical too. One difference is that Frigidaire hydrometer goes in increments of 5% whereas hOmeLabs specifies the humidity in 1% intervals.Winner: TieMAINTAINING HUMIDITY LEVEL (AUTO ON/OFF): This is where both units fail in my opinion. The idea here is that you can set a humidity level to maintain and the unit will automatically turn off when it reaches it and turn back on when the humidity rises again. Nice idea. The reality is that these units collect and store water, as such the humidity around them tends to increase quite rapidly once the airflow ceases. Frigidaire deals better with this problem by extending the window for off/on. For example, if you set the desired level at 50%, it’ll run until it hits 45%, and it won’t turn on again until humidity rises to 55%. It usually keeps off for about 10 mins, with the overall humidity variation during this time 1-3%. hOmeLabs unit is just a fail when it comes to this feature. It turns off as soon as it goes 1% below the set level (49% in my example) and turns back on 5% over. For some reason this takes about 1-2 mins, with no measureable variation of humidity elsewhere in the area.Winner: Frigidaire (but still fail)COLLECTION BUCKET: Both of these units come with ~1.6gal buckets that collect water. This is where you get to practically experience quality of the build as this is the part of the dehumidifier you will interact with the most. Aside of build and plastic quality here, one big practical difference is that Frigidaire includes a splash guard so you don’t have to worry about the water splashing all around while you carry it to the sink or tub. No such luck with hOmeLabs unit.Winner: FrigidaireWATER LEVEL INDICATOR: If you’re using the bucket for water collection, this is the part of the dehumidifier you will most likely to look at the most to try to figure out whether you need to empty the bucket now or wait till later. This is where hOmeLabs stands out. It has a bright green bar that floats on top of the water to indicate its level. It also feature a much more of vertical opening for the level to show. In contract, it’s practically impossible to see the level of the water in Frigidaire. There’s nothing floating on top and contrary to the pictures of the product, it does not come with light blue backlight illumination.Winner: hOmeLabsHOSE DRAINING: I haven’t used it on either unit, but both units have it. hOmeLabs has it at the back, and Frigidaire has it on the side.Winner: TieTEMPERATURE: Both of these unit generate heat, as I mentioned above. This is a basic part of the refrigeration cycle. Unlike with AC or a fridge, the resulting heat is mixed with exhaust air and is pumped back into the room. Both of these units generate a comparable amount of heat based upon my totally nonscientific method of sticking my hand into the exhaust.Winner: TieDIRECTION OF EXHAUST: Both of these units draw air from the back and pump it out through the side. One notable difference is that Frigidaire throws it up at about 45 degree angle, resulting in a much better air circulation and, thus, much more uniform humidity level throughout the area. hOmeLabs, shoots the air straight out, which results in the much more intense air circulation around the floor. It also ends up not mixing the air as well in the overall area: after about 1.5 hr of operation, the humidity at knee level was ~40% (down from 65%), whereas near the ceiling was 50-55% (also, down from 65%), as measure by a network on AccuRite hydrometers. Eventually it does all mix however, but be ready for this disparity. Depending on what you want, this is could be a good or bad.Winner: TieSPEED OF EXHAUST: Frigidaire has 3 speeds: Hi, Med, Lo. hOmeLabs has 2: Normal and Turbo. One thing to note here is Normal for hOmeLabs is roughly equal to Lo for Frigidaire, and Turbo is roughly equal to Medium. There’s no equivalent to Hi in hOmeLabs unit.Winner: FrigidaireNOISE LEVEL: Both of these units are very comparable. My purely subjective perception is that Frigidaire is slightly louder. Measuring with sound meter and operating at Medium speed (Frigidaire) and Turbo (hOmeLabs), Frigidaire produces ~59dB at about a foot away from the front and hOmeLabs produces ~57dB. Frigidaire is quite noticeably louder at Hi speed (~65dB).Winner: hOmeLabsPOWER CONSUMPTION: This is where there’s a big difference. All draws are measured with P3 P4400 Kill A Watt appliance. hOmeLabs draws about 1W at idle (non-operating) and 560W operating at Turbo mode. Furthermore, every time it turns on there’s a momentarily spike in current such that the lights momentarily flicker on the whole circuit. In comparison Frigidaire draws 0.4W at idle and 470W operating at Medium and 485W operating at Hi. It does not have any problems with momentary spikes at unit power on.Winner: FrigidaireCONCLUSION: While both of this units are very good and will get the job done, considering all of the above I’m giving Frigidaire 5 stars (but really A-) and hOmeLabs 4 stars (but really B+). Hopefully you’ll find this useful as you make your decision.

Chugs right along day in, day out with no issues. Really easy to use, very intuitive, and isn't too noisy. We have a similar one on our second level that has been rolling along several years at this point. Really pulls out the extra humidity like a champ, and the water we pull is used to water the plants! Filter is really easy to vacuum clean as well.

Competitively priced, acceptable sound (not too loud as some reviews mentioned, but my unit is 4500 sq foot size model for large home and basement applications, and it’s in our basement)
Works SUPER EFFICIENTLY, we empty it 2 times every day and our basement is at a walkout level meaning 1 of 4 cement walls is not underground. With all the rain we’ve had in MI this year it was reported that we had 5” of rain during the month of June alone which is much higher than MI normal June rainfall calculations. However, on Saturday July 24 there was a torrential rain storm with 4 tornadoes to surrounding towns between 10 and 40 miles surrounding my town and in the 25 years I’ve lived in my home which has heavily wooded and hilly topography in our subdivision where the home lots average 1/2 acre, we had so much rain it was unbelievable. It was reported to be 4” of rain in just under 45 minutes of time. My back lot which is hilly and wooded had a 3 foot-wide swale of water rushing across my property, even going uphill at times to finally be redirected and emptied into a huge culvert running under the side street on my property’s western border. I have a corner lot and that rushing water was truly shocking to observe! My dehumidifier has been operating just AWESOME keeping up with all our surrounding soggy yard from on top of our grass, but also underground as well. Our soil also contains a lot of clay, making run-off and soil reabsorption even more of a challenge this year.
My unit arrived within the estimated delivery expectations and even though the box had an area on one corner where the box was smashed in a bit, the dehumidifier was extremely well packaged so thankfully there was no damage to our unit. My husband assembled the parts and wheels with ease and he reported that it was easy to set up for your individual personalized setting choices as well. This dehumidifier comes with a one-year manufacturer warranty, but if you register your unit online at hOmeLabs.com website you qualify for an additional 6 months of Warranty coverage through the hOmeLabs manufacturer. Additionally, you have 30 days after purchase to decide if you would like to purchase any additional third-party warranty coverage as well. What has me on the fence regarding buying additional product coverage is two-fold. First, one of the third-party insurers starts their 2-years Warranty beginning on the date of the product purchase, so hence; their coverage runs concurrently with the manufacturer warranty which in my opinion is stupid AND in the other third-party insurer coverage it is not “clearly stated,” nor can anyone answer my question about who pays the “return shipping” fees if this product has to be sent out for repairs and if I’m recalling correctly I seem to remember that this dehumidifier weighs about 30 to 40 pounds. So if it’s the homeowner who has to pay return shipping fees to get it to someplace to be repaired those return costs will be exorbitant, so probably not worth buying additional extended warranty coverage. But it’s available to buy if the customer chooses too. Overall I’m extremely impressed and pleased at the functioning of this dehumidifier, I’m just hoping it’s going to keep operating this efficiently for several years. We take care of our products so if you do the required maintenance and keep the filters washed and cleaned as directed it should last for many seasons. In Michigan I only have to run it during the months when my furnace isn’t in use since the months that my furnace runs totally keeps any potential dampness from Spring rains or Winter snowfall dampness from developing in my basement.
I do highly recommend this product as we’ve had it in use around 3 weeks to date and not a speck of wetness, or any damp smells or musty odors at all can be identified at all…. And I have a nose like a hawk when it comes to noticing anything like that in my lower level PERIOD. So far, so good! Great purchase all around!!! It’s built for large 4500 sq foot areas but obviously it also is working totally and equally efficient inside my basement cedar closet too, so perfect for small spaces in my very large sq foot overall basement space!!!

Size: 3,000 Sq. FtVerified Purchase
For years I had a bathroom that was plagued with black mold due to excessive humidity. The little dots would appears along the tops of the walls shortly after I'd scrubbed them or painted over them, and then bloom into larger rosettes within weeks. We tried squirting bleach at them, we scrubbed them routinely, and they went away only to appear again a few weeks later. We tried leaving the door open to let some of the humidity out, but that meant less privacy. We opened the window in the summertime, and that helped, but in the winter it was far too cold. Then I stumbled across this machine while on vacation at my sister-in-laws house and the solution was clear.

I'm one of those people who obsessively research a major-ish purchase like this before I buy it. I don't like dropping cash on something that later turns out to be a dud, so I read reviews and comparisons and went and looked a few items in stores. Finally, I bought this machine and it's terrific. It works effectively and is easy to use. I empty it about once/week and clean the filter on average once/month. I'm very satisfied - if you're looking for a good, quality dehumidifier with great customer support look no further.

UPDATE 2/10/19: My original unit stopped working after a few months so I reached out to HOmelabs and they substituted it for free. The replacement has been chugging away for nearly a year now without any issues - faithfully sucking the moisture out of the air and drying out my steamy bathroom. Best of all - ZERO black mold. Love this unit and would highly recommend both the appliance and the brand.

UPDATE 7/6/20: this little beast is still going strong. Sucks the humidity out of the bathroom in the winter and then moves to the basement in the summer. Runs 25/7/365 without complaint or missing a beat. Pretty economical to run, too. Would recommend and buy another whenever the time comes.

UPDATE 5/14/22: This little champ is still going after nearly five years. It runs daily, faithfully dehumidifying our bathroom which sees 3-4 steaming hot showers per day (kids have grown into smelly teenagers since we’ve had this thing). I haven’t seen mold in so long I’ve forgotten what it looks like. About to pull the trigger on buying another unit for the basement over the summer, which will then replace the original on the bathroom/basement rotation when it eventually has to “go play with its friends on a farm upstate” someday.

UPDATE 7/31/23: This thing is truly the energizer bunny of dehumidifiers. It’s getting a little noisier and perhaps a little less efficient but after 5.5 years of non-stop service it has held up extremely well for a consumer grade appliance. I still haven’t subbed it out for a new one (probably will do so as we get back into fall and the bathroom window closes). When I do getting another one of these will be the easiest decision of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well with acceptable noise level

I found this dehumidifier works well. The noise level is fine. I have it in the basement, so it is not really a factor, but I am not sure I would have it in my bedroom and on when I wanted to sleep. It appears to drain well and I use a hose to drain directly to a drain pipe in the basement so I never have to worry about the container filling up.
A perfectly good product and works as required.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed one for the basement.

Works great for our basement. Keeps it nice and dry. Bought the hose that was advertised with the unit and that was a waste of money. The hose did not fit and we needed to get parts to make it fit. The hose was for a high pressure washer. Should have bought the display gadget that was advertised for about $20.00. All in all great machine and does what was promised.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good all around Dehumidifier

We had previously a good unit from another Name Brand but the refrigerant lost pressure. This new unit is quieter and seems a lot more efficient. I would have rated it a "5" but the design has the drain hose out of the back which seriously limits where the unit can be located. An out of the side hose is a much better configuration.
