The fates of two bitter enemies with opposing magical abilities are swept together in The Hurricane Wars, the spellbinding debut in a fantasy romance trilogy set in a Southeast Asia–inspired world ravaged by storms, perfect for fans of Fourth Wing and A Court of Thorns and Roses

The heart is a battlefield.

All Talasyn has ever known is the Hurricane Wars. Growing up an orphan in a nation under siege by the ruthless Night Emperor, she found her family among the soldiers who fight for freedom. But she is hiding a deadly secret: light magic courses through her veins, a blazing power believed to have been wiped out years ago that can cut through the Night Empire’s shadows.

Prince Alaric, the emperor’s only son and heir, has been tasked with obliterating any threats to the Night Empire’s rule with the strength of his armies and mighty shadow magic. He discovers the greatest threat yet in Talasyn: a girl burning brightly on the battlefield with the magic that killed his grandfather, turned his father into a monster, and ignited the Hurricane Wars. He tries to kill her, but in a clash of light and dark, their powers merge and create a force the likes of which has never been seen.

This war can only end with them. But an even greater danger is coming, and the strange magic they can create together could be the only way to overcome it. Talasyn and Alaric must decide… are they fated to join hands, or destroy each other?

An exquisite fantasy brimming with unforgettable characters and sizzling enemies-to-lovers romance set in a richly drawn world, The Hurricane Wars marks the breathtaking debut of an extraordinary new writer.

My biggest problem with this book is that it is called the Hurricane Wars and it opens with talking about the decades of war and bad the war has been then all of a sudden the war was just over. Way to quickly, I understand how it bleeds into the rest of the book but I couldn’t get over this plot point throughout the book.I did love the magic and how the two worlds collide as they work to find peace. The tension between Talasyn and Alaric builds throughout the book. It is the perfect example of a slow burn. I defiantly want to know how Talasyn is connected to her birth family and what secrets they are keeping from her. There is no way something bigger isn’t happening behind the scenes. I also personally love Alaric and hope that he find the light within him self. I think he has all the makings of a good morally grey character. I defiantly be reading the next book when it comes out.

Exciting storytelling, unique characters- did a great job with entertaining but leaving enough undiscovered that I am very excited for a sequel.

“The Hurricane Wars” follows Talasyn and Prince Alaric, two bitter enemies with opposing magical abilities, as they are thrust into an uneasy alliance to bring an end to the Hurricane Wars. But a greater threat is coming, and the searing passion they find in each other could either save their world or destroy it.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I thoroughly enjoyed Guanzon’s debut novel! I found great enjoyment in identifying connections between “The Hurricane Wars” and the films (7-9) as well as the ways in which Guanzon branches out to build the relationship dynamic between Alaric and Talasyn (inspired by Kylo Ren and Rey). I went feral over the addition of the arranged marriage trope that Guanzon incorporated into her storyline and really like how she infused Southeast Asian culture into Talasyn’s background. I wasn’t originally a Reylo shipper, but Guanzon has successfully converted me.

For readers picking this one up without having seen Star Wars, this book has its pitfalls. The magic of fanfiction is that writers can create an alternate universe where beloved characters that may not have otherwise been romantically attached can get together. Very minimal world-building is needed because the assumption is that the target audience is already familiar with the source material. The problem is that traditionally published novels don’t work that way. Readers aren’t always part of certain fandoms and, in my opinion, “The Hurricane Wars” (part of the fanfic-to-romance pipeline) suffers from assuming everyone is a Star Wars fan. I came into this book with a full understanding of the characters, the magic system, and the conflict. I can see how others who have not seen the films could easily become lost because at the end of the day, the goal of this book is for Reylo to get together, even if it is to the detriment of the world-building, plot, and conflict. I think that is why part I felt so rushed to me. Part I is not as developed as part II because only the bare minimum is done in terms of developing the world and magic system to establish that Alaric and Talasyn are enemies. Part II was much more interesting because that is where the sexual tension, angst, and banter between the characters finally comes into play. It is clear that the romance is what drives this book in comparison to the war that is going on or the magic that is present.

I didn’t mind this, which is why I’ll likely pick up “A Monsoon Rising”. I’m ultimately glad I stuck with this book despite getting bogged down by part I because I absolutely devoured part II. And hey, if this is the book that convinces more people to watch Star Wars, I’m willing to look past its shortcomings.

This is a painfully slow burn. But the writing is beautiful, the story engaging, and you want the characters to succeed. I especially love the detail to food the author gives. Overall it’s a good start to an epic fantasy. My only complaint is I wanted a bit more from Alaric and Tallison.

The countries that were developed in this marvelous story, and the characters that stem from them, lead you into conspiracy after conspiracy, and even into war (if you don’t watch your step!) This book is a great read. It never became confusing or overwhelming or boring. The characters are well suited, and quite believable. 5 Stars from me!

This is what I think of when I think of romantasy.

The quick build up at the start of the book had me excited. I loved watching them interact with each other before the whole arranged marriage thing came into play. It was gritty and fun and dark…

But the romance. Oooh!! Watching the push and pull of these two as they battle between their strong attraction to each other, that connection between them and knowing they come from separate sides of an all-consuming war.

This pining, heart-wrenching romance is what I live for.

And now I need book 2

This book, for me, started dreadfully. It was slow to pick up and I kept putting the book down to do other things instead of read. Around 16% is when things really started for me.

You might think to yourself, "16% is barely into this book", but alas this is a very long book. Once things started picking up I quite enjoyed how lengthy this is - it gives us more delicious interaction between our polar opposite main characters.

I'm glad I held on to read the rest of this book, the hate chemistry between the MMC and MFC was perfect. The worst part about reading this book is now I have to wait for the second book!

The writing and world is so unique and beautiful. Very interesting magic system and a very slow burn enemies to lovers to enemies to lovers to enemies (you get the drift). The beginning of the book is heavy with world building and political backstory which while nessecary did feel a bit slow. I'm really looking forward to continuing this series! Amazingly polished for a debut novel!
