The Book of Azrael (Gods & Monsters 1) Kindle Edition
A thousand years ago, Dianna gave up her life in the deserts of Eoria to save her dying sister. She called upon anyone who would listen, not expecting a monster far worse than any nightmare to answer. Now she does what Kaden asks, even if that means securing an ancient relic from the very creatures that hunt her.
A King thought long dead and long forgotten.
In the old world his name was Samkiel. In the new world it is Liam, but one title remains true throughout time. He is the World Ender, a myth to his enemies, a savior and King to those loyal to him. After the Gods War, he locked himself away, hiding from the world. He denied his crown and responsibilities, leaving the very ones who needed him most to deal with the fallout of the death of their homeworld. Now an attack on those he holds dear sends him back to the one realm he never wished to visit again and into the sights of an enemy he thought imprisoned eons ago.
Now enemies older than time must put aside their differences and work together in hopes of saving both their world and every realm in between.

Dianna is a badass, fiery FMC and girl, has she been through some shit. I'm not sure I've read a book with a true morally grey FMC before and honestly I loved it. And Liam is the new standard for me. I will not settle for less than this godly masterpiece. Liam has been self-exiled in another realm for a long time, and Dianna's actions are the catalyst that bring him back to her realm. Their kinds have been enemies for thousands of years, and it is most definitely not love at first sight. She may or may not drop a building on him... But Bloodthirsty & Grumpy become reluctant allies and work together, and seeing their story unfold is so compelling. They are one of my favorite book couples ever!
I love a slow burn and this boy did this BURNNNN! And by that I mean it was a looooong wait for the romance to ramp up, but it was well worth the wait and I absolutely love the dynamic of their relationship. Enemies to lovers, forbidden love, one bed, touch her/him and you die-- it's got some of my very favorite tropes but it doesn't feel overloaded with them. They feel intentional and not like they're just there to be there, ya know?
This book is definitely giving off some Vampire Diaries (the show, not books) vibes but in the best way?? Dianna is Katherine Pierce but with more heart, at least in my opinion! She will do what needs to be done, period. I know Amber has said the humor in this was inspired by Buffy and I totally see it!
It's been a while since I've read another fantasy book that has gotten me so excited and invested in the world! I cannot wait to see more of this world and the beings and the monsters be flushed out even more in coming books! I feel like we were only given a small dose of this world she created and just this crumb was so delicious!
I have fallen in love with Amber's writing and I just love her style so much. She writes amazing characters, and she just creates these really beautiful moments that stay with you.
The audiobook is also great if that's your vibe-- I often enjoy reading and listening in tandem and Ruthie is amazing!
If you're ready to fall in love with a fresh new fantasy world-- you have to pick this up! If you like Buffy, TVD, the Originals, Supernatural-- I think you will love this series & Dianna!
**The majority of this was written after reading just this book, but I have since read all of the books that are released at this time (1-3) and I just want to add that the story in this book is just getting started, the world becomes even more vast and exciting, and everything you think you know?? Strap in.
The Book of Azrael is urban fantasy and a bit post apocalyptic. It’s still high fantasy, so the world is completely different than ours. We meet Dianna, who is an immortal that was made, not dissimilar to a vampire, but I’m sure they would hate the comparison. Dianna works for the king of the monsters, but currently she has no way out. That is until she meets The World Ender, Samkiel aka Liam.
This book was so surprising in the best ways for me. I loved the world building. I loved all of the gods and monsters. The descriptions were so good and I could definitely picture them all, for better or worse.
I loved the dynamic between Dianna and Samkiel, who goes by Liam for most of this book. Yes, there is a story behind the name, which I loved. They are true enemies, and it’s a fairly slow burn. I appreciate that they were becoming friends before there was any romance or intimacy.
One of my favorite aspects of this book was the mental health representation. It may not be terribly uncommon for characters in fantasy novels to have nightmares, but I love how Dianna helped Liam through his. She calmed him down from panicking to the point of destroying things with his magic. It was nice to see that he wasn’t perfectly in control all the time.
I love this world and can’t wait to pick up the next book.
First of all, Dianna is a badass. She’s all you need in a FMC. Funny, smart, independent, capable, a warrior, a sister, a lover, freaking resilient and above all, powerful in her heart and soul.
She sacrificed her life, literally, to save her sister, becoming a monster. Her love for her sister was the only tether she had with her humanity.
Liam. Liam was a a freaking depressed, brooding, rude, beautiful, funny, somewhat romantic and powerful MMC. He went through a lot of life changing experiences. Making it even harder when he was an immortal god-being.
Their love story is a true, epic enemies to lovers.
They were created to hate and kill each other. No one ever thought the 2 species who are destined enemies, would come together on this action packed adventure to find the one relic that can potentially kill a god.
This journey will show them what true love means, and uncover many secrets kept for millions of years.
A masterpiece of a book to be honest.
Well done Amber! 👏🏼
This is an easy 5 ⭐️ for me.
