The Bet: Winslow Brothers Series, Book 1 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

When it comes to life's fun and games, always know: The rules. What's at stake. When to quit.

Wise words from...well...my fortune cookie. But wise words, nonetheless.

I just wish the Fortune Cookie People had considered how hard the whole "knowing when to quit" would be to carry out when a woman like me is gambling with her feelings. Heart-palpitating, vageen-tingling, butterflies-in-my-belly feelings for a noncommittal, hot-as-sin player by the name of Jude Winslow.

After a crazy night where we were both pretending to be someone else, I've found myself immersed in the fun of the fling. The thrill. The irresistible charm. The pleasure of being with a man like him.

Problem is, I'm positive he's the exact opposite of husband material, and that is a serious issue for someone who is fixated on finding her happily ever after.

I know the rules and I know the stakes, oh wise Fortune Cookie. Now I'd just like to know how close to self-destruction I have to get before I find the will to quit Jude Winslow. Goodness knows, when your heart is on the line, you can't ante up your bet with an IOU.

Contains mature themes.

Wasn’t really convinced the hero was interested in the heroine for more than a good time..
The way these two met was both amusing and steamy! I instantly felt the intense pull and physical attraction between Sophie and Jude and I couldn’t help but enjoy the way their paths crossed multiple times. From the very beginning, Jude makes it very, very clear that he doesn’t do attachments or relationships and that he’s only interested in $.ex. Following advice to not be so rigid and cautious, Sophie agrees to let loose and have some fun with Jude.Cutting to the chase, I would’ve liked to have seen more of the ‘getting to know you’ stage. I thought the majority of Sophie and Jude’s fling only focused on the physical aspects and not the small details you might learn about someone through conversation. To me, it didn’t seem like Jude cared about much other than getting Sophie off and testing her limits. Even when he did lay on some charm to try to wine and dine Sophie, it’s sole purpose seemed to be about delaying gratification versus getting to know her. Some of the things I did enjoy about this book were Jude’s family dynamic. There was a lot of teasing, head smacking, and speaking their minds. This was a family that didn’t hold their tongues when they had opinions, and even if they didn’t exactly approve or agree with what the other brothers were doing, you could still feel the unconditional love they have for one another.I really appreciated that even though this might be considered a romcom, mental health was seriously addressed throughout this book! It’s not often that I read about mental health issues in a book, let alone characters seeking help for their mental health, so I really valued how it was written into this story.Favorite Quote:"Sorry’s not going to turn back time, now is it? The only woman who can make me feel like it’s possible is Cher. And I don’t see her here.” -Sophie

Sophie wasn't looking for love or even a fling when she pretended to be something she wasn't. But she found one while chasing the other, and it ended up changing the course of her life.

Of course, Jude was pretending, too. And no matter how good it was with Sophie, no matter how many of his own rules he broke when it came to her, Jude kept pretending to be someone he wasn’t: a cold-hearted, love ‘em and leave ‘em kind of guy.

Pretending was bound to hurt when their hearts were on the line. Their love came fast, but Sophie and Jude needed to work through their pasts if they hoped to save that love from careening out of control and destroying them both. Featuring hot romance, a woman with big dreams, and a panty thief, The Bet by Max Monroe will have you falling hard for Sophie, Jude, and the rest of the Winslow family.

I really fell hard for the romance between Sophie and Jude. I loved how Max Monroe started both of them in a lie - meeting while pretending to be someone they’re not - and neither character would have or should have worked well with the other while in the lie. But as soon as the lies were revealed and they dropped all pretenses, they really were perfect for each other in personality, lifestyles, and even careers. Sophie and Jude both started off with their idea of what the perfect relationship was for them. For Sophie, she wanted that insta-love, and Jude wanted no love. And it was fun and sexy watching them grow with each other throughout the novel, realizing by the end that their ideals have changed.

Besides writing great characters who go on an interesting journey together, Max Monroe includes some very hot scenes between Sophie and Jude. We’re talking everything from vanilla to exhibitionism and everything in between. Anyone who is a fan of the tall, dark, and handsome take-charge type in the bedroom will fall for Jude as he falls for Sophie. Their chemistry was instant, and I was happy that they got past their early lies quickly so they could start building a relationship together. Sophie and Jude’s relationship truly is what keeps the plot moving, and I loved seeing their relationship blossom so early on.

Max Monroe’s writing is easy to read and get lost in. I found myself diving into Sophie and Jude’s dual perspectives and, with so much happening between the two, I didn’t want to put The Bet down. This book has a lot of elements: romance, family drama, personal growth, and past issues to resolve. I loved that this wasn’t just a romance, with the romantic leads just getting from point A to point B. Max Monroe also included just enough secondary character story to seamlessly transition to the next book in the Winslow brothers’ story. Well-written and sexy, The Bet is a fantastic romance between two people who finally find the love they’ve been missing.

Intriguing to run across this book that has a lot of mysterious monikers all rolled into one name. Or as they state, ‘A secret duo of romance authors team up under the pseudonym Max Monroe to bring you a sexy, laugh-out-loud new series…& more. ;) Writing partners and long time friends, Max and Monroe strive to live and write all the fun, sexy swoon so often missing from their Facebook newsfeed. Sarcastic by nature, their two writing souls feel like they’ve found their other half.’

The refreshing aspect of this book is the degree of humor that they infuse steamy erotica. The language is a bit overdone in the potty mouth category, but it fits the story just fine. Naughty all the way .A tease of their sparkling writing skills follows as we meet Sophie: “Party of ten for Sophie Sage,” I tell the big, burly bouncer behind the velvet rope. The man is dressed all in black and has a perpetual scowl etched across his lips, but I’ assuming that come with the job territory. Ever Friday and Saturday night, he’s tasked with the responsibility of filing this club with partygoers who will have a good time, but also, won’t act like total a******s. Sure, it sounds simple enough, but all it takes is standing in the never-ending line outside – in the bitter February cold, mind you – for a mere five minutes with people yelling and shouting toward the bouncers at the door to understand it’s not simple at all. If anything, the man is being paid to deal with verbal harassment and demanding drunk idiots. All night long…’

The plot is summarized as follows: ‘When it comes to life’s fun and games, always know: The rules. What’s at stake. When to quit. Wise words from…well…my fortune cookie. But wise words, nonetheless. I just wish the Fortune Cookie People had considered how hard the whole “knowing when to quit” would be to carry out when a woman like me is gambling with her feelings. It is a rollercoaster ride sparkling with erotica and guffaws. Enjoy a different vantage! Grady Harp, July 21

The Bet was a really enjoyable read! I loved the banter, the chemistry and the steam was unreal!
Jude doesn't want to fall in love and doesn't do commitment, but when he sees Sophie he can't deny their connection.
I loved seeing him slowly fall for Sophie and I really enjoyed reading the family group texts. The ribbing between the brothers was so funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spicy friends with benefits read!
Reviewed in Canada on November 15, 2022
Overall I found this to be a very light and enjoyable read. Their meet cute was really fun and their progression from strangers to lovers to friends with benefits was filled with A LOT of spice. Jude is your typical party playboy who doesn't do relationships and Sophie doesn't do casual, so they were in for a bumpy ride. I did find Jude's "swagger" frustrating at times, but his relationship with his niece and family redeemed him a lot. This was a really quick read, had some laugh our loud moments, really good spice, and was just a fun spicy read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 4, 2023
This book has a lot of sexual content it absolutely doesn't bother me but note there is a lot. Loved how they came to meet. That was a really funny story. Jude this hard up anti relationship person mixed with Sophie's check list . A really amusing story and the siblings texts are funny.

The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because belle drama really got on my nerves. Now some people might be ok and love it. But it wasn't for me I think she sounded like a brat. But at the same time it made sure you knew the twins had different personalities . Certainly glad I read the book.
