No pool cleaner is perfect but...

No pool cleaner is perfect but...
After reading literally hundreds of reviews, I purchased a cordless pool cleaner - it got 35 five star reviews on Amazon and none less than that! I was impressed. I turned off the pump so it wouldn't get stuck on the (raised) drain. It got stuck. It got stuck on the stairs as well. In both cases, it got free after some effort. The problem with these cordless cleaners is that they are power limited because of the battery and freeing itself gobbles up energy. The cleaner also struggled to get up the walls. Plan B was to purchase the Dolphin Nautilus CC Plus with WiFi, based on the reviews. In choosing a cleaner I considered the size and shape of my pool because it became clear to me from the reviews that one size doesn't fit all, i.e., a great cleaner for one pool might be terrible for another. I have a lap pool that measures 45 x 7.5 feet, is about four feet deep throughout, and has stairs on one end. I have used the Nautilus CC Plus three times. My pool doesn't get a lot of leaves or debris so I don't need a large basket. The provided baskets are more than ample. My biggest problem is the junk that collects at the waterline so I had hopes that this robot would be helpful. The Frequently Asked Questions, included in the documentations, answered the question, "Does my Dolphin clean the waterline? Answer: The cleaner is designed to climb the walls, but does not reach the waterline". See attached video. This does exactly what I need it to do. Obviously, they need to hire a better marketing person. This robot does not get stuck over the raised drain with the pump running and drawing water from the pool. It climbs the steps (seems to love them) but will occasionally get stuck on a step or in a corner, but it releases itself, and because this is tethered you don't have to worry about draining a battery. It also has considerable power and thrust for climbing the walls and stairs due to it drawing current from the power supply. My only concern is the wear and tear on the paddles/fins, whatever, when it gets stuck as sometimes they keep spinning against my PebbleSheen surface before releasing. Time will tell. I have not been able to pair it with either my iPhone or iPad but I have contacted the company in hopes that they can solve the problem. If not, this is not a game changer for me. Finally, just put it in the water and walk away. I found myself getting stressed and yelling at it, "Why are you attacking the stairs? You haven't touched the other end of the pool? Why do you keep going over the same area?" I thought that this was supposed to be smart and map out the pool but it didn't appear to be doing anything intelligent. I finally went away and when I came back it had covered the whole pool and picked up everything. The robot does not have a memory so every cleaning is a new experience, like a goldfish doing a swim around the fishbowl and forgetting the last pass. Cleaning the filters is a breeze. See the photo of the debris that it picked up on its first use. You can spend a lot more for a pool robot but at this price I highly recommend this cleaner. Update: I have now had this robot for a while and am still very happy with it. The customer service has been excellent. After a few emails back and forth about the WiFi not working they decided to send a new power supply. That fixed the problem. With the Dolphin app on your phone you can turn the robot on and off and schedule it to clean every day or two other options. Unfortunately, you cannot control the robot. This would be useful as it did get stuck a couple of times, and rather than wait for it to free itself (it was taking a long time on the raised drain or step) I decided to free it manually. Perhaps in the future they might add more capability to the app so you could get the robot free without having to intervene manually. I would love to be able to tell it to reverse when it headed to my steps. In conclusion, I stand by my recommendation about the efficacy of the robot and now can add that they have great customer service.

We bought a house with a 16' x 36' pool in 2013. This was a new experience for us, and we tried to become pool people... water analysis, filter operation, chemical addition, etc. The thing I hated the most was the chore of pulling out the big coil of hose and setting up the vacuum head on the 16' pole and then spending an hour plus TRYING to vacuum the pool. The 8' deep end was the worst.... All of this to no avail, as every season we ended up with yellow algae problems, frustrated with our efforts, and put off by the appearance of our water. I was beginning to try to calculate how many dump truck loads of dirt it would take to fill the pool in!! I began to get interested in a pool cleaning robot every time we went in to buy even more chemicals to fix our current pool problem, and finally I decided to take the plunge and buy a robot. This was to be my last effort to make our pool work. We ordered the Nautilus Plus by Dolphin/Maytronics, in March and when it arrived I was not sure this was the way to go. The Dolphin set in our house for a few more weeks until we opened our pool (after all the "helicopter" things were through falling from the Maple trees...) Finally, the day of our pool opening arrived... and we gently placed our Dolphin in the pool, and pushed the start button on the control box....

At this point we should cue the music and have a bright spot-light shine on the Dolphin!!! This little monster took off with a vengeance! I was immediately impressed with the amount of water it was moving, and the pristine clear trail it left as it made it's way across the bottom of our pool to the deep end! Maybe 2 to 2 and a half hours later we took it out of our now clean pool, somewhat stunned by it's initial performance! Every one in my family was in awe of it's performance, and we realized that we had, perhaps, turned a corner in our battle to have a clean and inviting pool!

Three months in, June 2016, and the Dolphin continues to do an excellent job, and our pool water looks like liquid glass! The Dolphin has become an important part of our pool maintenance regimen, and we use it normally about twice a week to clean the pool. I stress that this is a part of our overall effort to keep out pool in the best shape possible. We still do water analysis and add chemicals... but no where near the same amount as before our Dolphin! We back wash our filter once a week now, so we are saving lots of water, AND most important to me, I no longer have to break my back and take my time to manually vacuum the pool, just let the Dolphin do that thing it does sooooo very well!!!

Let me address some of the negative things I have read in the reviews of this pool cleaner...

Warranty problems: We have had NO problems with our Dolphin. Right out of the box it has worked like a champion, so I have no comments on the help, support and warranty problems others have posted.

Instructions: Yes, the 'bot comes with very little in the way of operation instructions. There is really only one sheet of instructions with drawings on it, that tell how to use the Dolphin... but, if you have even a basic understanding of mechanical things, you should have no problems in making the Dolphin work. Every thing snaps together with ease. Pay attention to how it comes apart and then reverse the process after you clean it... nooooo problems! I guess that Maytronics could do a much better job with the instructions- better drawings and expanded written directions, but I can say I honestly have not had any problems understanding how this critter works. It is very straight forward in construction and operation.

Filters: Our Dolphin came with 2 sets of filter cartridges. They are made out of some very sturdy plastic type material and require only a good rinse with the hose to clean. We used the "coarse" set of filters the first time we cleaned the pool, to help get out a few leaves, but from then on, we used the "fine" filter cartridges with great success. We ALWAYS take the time to disassemble the filter cartridges after each use and clean them. We then hose out the inside of the Dolphin to complete the process. Like all things electro-mechanical, normal maintenance and cleaning determine the life of the machine. The filter cartridges are held on the filter frames with 2 rotating snap clips. I think that these could be problematic in the future, but look like they would be easily replaced with a screwdriver if replacement is ever required.

Steps and Walls: Yep, try as hard as it might, the little Dolphin is just too big to clean our steps. We just use a brush on an 8' pole to sweep any debris on the steps into the bottom of the pool prior to starting the Dolphin... problem solved. I can gladly spend the minute to sweep the steps vs. the hours plus of time to manually vacuum the pool any day! Our Dolphin climbs right up the walls and runs partially out of the water to clean the pool walls.... it's like it's maaaagic! LOL!

Carrier: Our Dolphin Nautilus Plus did not come with a carrier. It does have a very sturdy built in handle that makes carrying it, and getting it out of the pool pretty easy. If you have health problems or back problems, etc. this could be a concern, but we have had no problems here. Also, I have never seen any debris fall out of the unit as I remove it from the pool.

That's about all I can think of for right now. Maybe at the end of this pool season, I will follow up with my first season Dolphin results.... stay tuned!

I hope this is of help to all thinking about buying a Dolphin. I think this is one of the best purchases I have made in years!!!! We now no longer say we are going to clean the pool with the Dolphin... we now say that we are "RELEASING THE KRACKEN!!!!" LOL! Thank you Maytronics, for allowing me to now enjoy my pool, not just spend hours and $$$ trying to keep it clean!

I bought this a month ago after researching a set of options (including the Dolphin Sigma and various other sub-$1000 robots). I wanted to give it a few weeks before I wrote a review and try it out, and I have to say I'm glad that I bought this (even at the higher price).

Getting going was pretty easy. Could this have used a better user manual? Sure, but I had it up and running in about 30 mins. I wasn't sure how to "diagonalize" the float handle out of the box (see below) but just tried it at max diag. The controls (on the app) for setting a cycle, monitoring progress, etc. are fairly simple to use, and complete enough for everything I need to do. It is true that the "drive by app" feature isn't great -- it has a 2 second lag between command and actuation, but once you know that, you can get it to the place you want to go if you have a tough spot you want to hit manually. And you can start it from anywhere using your phone once it is tied into your WiFi, I start mine from the grocery store or wherever.

In terms of cleaning, this thing is really pretty excellent, honestly my pool has never looked so good with so little effort, and this in the dead of winter when my pool is typically full of leaves, twigs, dirt, and other assorted muck. This robot has probably saved me about 2-3 hours per week (if not more) of sweeping and vacuuming my pool, which is a 25K gallon in-ground rectangle with some curve-y sides. the 2.5 hour cycle I have been running once every other day or once per day when I think about it and that seems to cover the entire thing.

The robot climbs walls pretty effectively and does wall cleaning. There are adjustments for the "float handle" for putting that in place to make the robot either "stay high" on the walls for extended time or not. I have put it on the highest setting, and it seems to "crawl" along the water line (cleaning as it goes) for about 2-6 feet on this setting. But most of the time it spends on the floor of the pool with forays up walls. I think that makes sense.

A couple of points on cleaning (pros):
* Both sets of filters seem to pick up fine dirt/sand (which I have a lot of) and I can't tell much of a difference.
* Leaves-twigs-etc -- gets all of that stuff no prob
* Cleaning the filters -- really simple, easy, takes 3-5 mins every few days. Way way easier than I used to do (pole-mounted vacuum, cleaning the sock filter a pain). I could probably clean these filters once a week or two, but I get a lot of stuff in my pool so I've been playing it safe
* Goes over raised drain covers no problem. I was considering the cheaper Dolphin Sigma model but there were some comments that that model would get stuck on top of the covers. I wasn't sure if this model would have the same problem, but it doesn't -- goes right over them.
* It also climbs curved concave and convex walls. This surprised me, I thought the laws of physics would preclude a concave wall climb, but somehow it has enough traction/suction to do just that. Nifty.

Balanced issues (cons):
* The robot will climb up steps (especially the deeper ones that are more "table-like") and clean those. But not very often and not consistently every cycle. I find I have to sweep some fine grit off the steps about once every week or two
* Does the robot get "stuck" sometimes? Yes, I have one particular notch area in my pool where it will get itself jammed (lightly) in that notch and not be able to back out on its own. I'd say this happens once every 4 or 5 cycles, and I just gently pull it by the cable back away from that area and it goes back to cleaning the rest of the pool.

Unknowns:
* Can you really leave it in the pool for extended periods of time? I have left mine in so far for about a week at a time, but I'm not sure still if this will cause any long term harm. I try to take it out of the water for a "rest" a couple of days at a time once a week. Not sure if that is a good idea or a waste of time.

I just hope this thing lasts. If I can get at least 18-24 months about of it, will be a huge win.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far so good - it cleans, though not as I expected it to
Reviewed in Canada on June 12, 2023

After reading quite a few negative reviews, I had few major concerns when I purchased this expensive item. People reported that eero extenders could be a problem, robot stuck in the middle of the cycle etc. However, in my case I had no problem connecting to an eero router even without turning off 5GHz (eero offers such an option via application) It quickly connected and started cleaning the pool. It got stuck at 23% the first time, but was able to complete the cycle the next time. To be honest, after opening the pool it's not in the best shape, so I did anticipate it will take multiple rounds to clean it up. I did anticipate that after the first pass it would be 80-90% clean, but in reality it's about 60%, so I assume it will take 3-4 rounds to clean it up completely. Still much better than doing it manually. The length of the cable is more than adequate. I was surprised to learn that the control block is not waterproof, but water-resistant, so it should not be exposed to water (i.e. rain will be a problem) Well, it's a minor issue to me. Also, wall climbing seems to be exaggerated. So far, I have not witnessed waterline scrubbing (still learning) It does climb the walls, but stops short below the surface without reaching the waterline. Maybe some other routine does that - still learning. I did not see the software issues one of the reviewers described (cut the schedule line), though the need for the cloud connection is concerning (cloud connection did not stop the robot from moving though) Lack of notification on the phone when the robot is stuck or cycle complete is also slightly annoying. Simple thing to do and would save a lot of hassle. Cleaning the filters is a super easy process. Bottom line - so far so good. I'll see how it works in a long run, but it's definitely a huge time and energy saver compared to the manual cleaning.
Update 3 days later. The pool is not sparkly clean after 5th cycle (1 is thorough, others are regular as I do not see much difference to be honest) Those disconnects from "cloud" are getting annoying. Usually, the connection restores rather quickly, but I had once to disconnect power to restore the connection. It seems wifi functionality of Dolphin can be improved. Also, I cannot get the robot to get to the waterline. The video shows nice waterline scrubbing, but in my case it stops on the first angle between floor and vertical wall rather than climbing to the waterline. Furthermore, I am totally puzzled by the sentence in the manual that the handle must be adjusted diagonally. What does it mean? How? Instructions are not provided. The handle can be adjusted, no doubt, but what is the right position? And what's the difference does it make? I guess I'll have to experiment or call Dolphin to figure out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sadly did not work

Unfortunately, my unit did not pick up the dirt in my pool. I've owned a Dolphin previously and it was great. Not sure if the unit was faulty as the supplier Chakra were awful to deal with and withheld £450 from my refund. They said the unit had been used as I said to them I had to use it to find out it didn't work! Amazon’s A to Z refund ensured I received a full refund.

El Dolphin navega solo por la alberca y en dos horas la deja limpia. El resultado es fantástico, sin complicaciones y sin desperdiciar agua.

I was pretty excited to see this thing start up in my pool. The water boiled like crazy on the surface once the robot was turned on, it looked super powerful. Cleans the pool perfectly. I was used to cleaning filters from the bottom of the machine, so the top loading filters were a good change of pace. Plenty of filter space too for debris and sediment. I don't know if they recommend that you clean the filters after each use but I haven't been doing this. The filters also seem very durable. The wifi feature doesn't reach my house but I never really cared about that. The price is steep but I just wanted the best machine I could get with the least amount of hassle and I got it. The pool has never been cleaner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should have bought this sooner!!

Loved the Dolphin and bought and use the wifi connection. We have a 12 foot deepend pool and 4 ft shallow - 40 feet long, 20 feet wide. It worked amazingly! Pool is spotless. It does take a bit for the Dolphin to do the entire pool. The wall cleaning is really cool with absolutely no problems in climbing. Stairs are ok...sometimes forgets to to the top stair but that's ok. It is pricey but well worth it. Saves a lot of time vacuuming and our pool sparkles.
