Things didn't start out well when Amazon sent a smelly returned backpack full of pet hair. I contacted Kurgo to ask a configuration question and they were wonderful. They told me I'd received an old model and to throw it away or donate it rather than return it so that this didnt happen to somebody else. They then sent me a brand new pack express mail so that I would have it in time for my trip!
Kurgo support has been wonderful each time I have contacted them and the incredible staff has always far exceeded my expectations. Kudos!
Now for the pack itself. It is very well made. It is comfortable for the human and easily adjustable for both myself and my wife. Our 16lb dachshund mix liked it just fine - checking out the scenery rather than squirming.
TIP - make sure to use the harness clip as our pup lept through the front hole like a dolphin through a hoop when we first test fitted the pack on the ground.

Escape from backpack!
The material, zipper, and design are durable. The bottom of the bag is super strong.... I would reconsider a re-design for slightly small but bigger dogs, like mine. My YoorkiePoo weighs now (almost 18 pounds) and he has either attempted to get out either the space is too tight, so he figures sticking one or two arms out is better or maybe he is trying to escape the bag; too hot, or the two bars that hold the back straight get in the way of his comfort. So, far he has kept in his arms/paws only in very short distances or when waiting for the train. Once the short distance is over and his on the train he is pulling out his paw or paws (sometimes attempts to fully exit via the space his head sticks out. You have to use all the clips on the bag in order for your back not to look and feel like you are being pulled against gravity to be comfortable. The added storage areas (for my size of dog) do not help. It takes away space for him...I barely put a small water bottle for him, so he does not feel so hot and flat. ****Suggestions for designer-Erase the additional space (zipper); on the side, the panel makes it all mesh (more air flowing inside); Remove the holding sticks (to create more space for the dogs that are over x amount of weight); Add more fabric where the dog rest the chain for more comfort.****I have more suggestions...Yes. I would recommend this product for smaller dogs maybe under 15 pounds, who are colder than hot most of the time.

This backpack has been perfect for our puppy. We are still working on leash training so to get her out and about we tote her along in this. Honestly, I don’t think she minds it at all. She is about 12 lbs. right now so it’s still easy to carry her in this. There is so much space in this backpack and I love the water bottle holders. They come in handy! I also like all the adjustable straps on this backpack. I have to adjust it way more than my fiancé does, but once I do it is perfect and makes hiking with a puppy on your back much more comfortable. I would definitely suggest purchasing this item if you are interested in taking your dog on adventures with you!

Didn't work for my senior Jack Russell Terrier

This is an absolutely wonderful, high-quality backpack, but sadly it doesn't work for my senior Jack Russell Terrier. No matter how I situated her inside, the opening placed too much tension on her throat and she would cough. I even tried placing her head out the side (as shown in the photo), but it didn't help. Such a bummer because I love the rest of the design with all the storage and nice material. Even the used backpack I ordered came in great shape. Was really hard for me to return, but my old dog's comfort is the priority. I ordered a K9 Sport Sack instead and that's a much better option for her (despite not being as well-made as this backpack). I'm a big Kurgo fan - I use their harness and booster seat - so had high hopes for this.

I bought three different backpack carriers for my 14lb Shih Tzu. The Kurgo bag was the winner! It’s easy to get the puppy in & out of, and plenty of room for the puppy to wiggle around and lay down. My only issues are that the bag is a big heavy (about 3lbs) and it’s way over priced. Ultimately this isn’t something I would use often or for long periods of time due to the weight, so I’m returning it.

I have been searching and searching for a dog carrier backpack that also had room for my water, and everything else I carry for day hikes. It’s so comfortable to wear and my dog loves being in it, I wish someone would carry me while I hiked lol! The vents on the side are great at keeping her cool too. Everything was thought about when this was designed. My dog is 8 lbs.
